Every dental service for Jarvis patientsStrength for a weakened tooth
A crown is a custom cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It is often recommended when a tooth has a large filling, a crack, extensive decay or has had root canal treatment. By encircling the tooth, a crown helps hold it together and restore its shape, appearance and ability to chew.
Jarvis patients who have been told they may need a crown can have it assessed and placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why it is suggested, the materials available and the steps involved.

Why a crown
Crowns are commonly suggested for teeth with large or failing fillings, cracks, worn surfaces or after root canal treatment on back teeth. They can also cover badly discoloured or misshapen teeth and anchor bridges. Ask the dentist to show you the X-rays or photos that support the recommendation.
Depending on how much healthy tooth remains, an onlay, which covers only part of the chewing surface, or a large filling may be options. These can preserve more natural tooth. Ask about the trade-offs in strength, longevity and cost, so you understand why a full crown is or is not the best choice.
Materials
Ceramic and porcelain crowns can closely match the colour of surrounding teeth, making them popular for visible areas. Modern ceramics can also be strong enough for back teeth in many cases. The dentist will choose a shade with you and explain how the material handles biting forces.
Metal crowns, including gold alloys, are very durable and require less tooth reduction, though they are more visible. Porcelain fused to metal combines strength with a tooth-coloured surface. Your bite, grinding habits and aesthetic preferences all play a role in the recommendation.
The process
The tooth is numbed and shaped to make room for the crown. Any decay or old filling material is removed, and the tooth may be built up if needed. Impressions or a scan record the shape, and a temporary crown is placed. Avoid sticky foods and chew carefully on the temporary.
When the permanent crown arrives, the temporary is removed, and the new crown is checked for fit, colour and bite. Adjustments are made as needed before it is cemented. You should leave with a crown that feels comfortable. Let the dentist know if anything feels high or rough.
Living with it
Brush twice a day and floss carefully around the crown, especially at the gumline where decay can start. The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can. Regular cleanings and checkups help keep the margins healthy and allow the dentist to monitor the crown’s condition.
Contact the office if the crown feels loose, if you notice sensitivity, pain or a bad taste, or if it chips. If you grind your teeth, ask whether a night guard is advisable to protect the crown. Prompt attention can often save a crown that might otherwise need replacing.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to schedule an assessment or crown appointment. Mention which tooth is affected and any pain, cracks or previous treatment on it.
If another dentist recommended a crown, bring their notes or X-rays so the recommendation can be reviewed.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Many crowns last for years, often a decade or more, with good care. Their lifespan depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and how well the tooth underneath is cared for.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common for a short time. Call the office if discomfort persists or worsens.
Teeth that have had root canal treatment, particularly back teeth, can become more brittle. A crown helps protect them from fracturing. The dentist will explain whether a crown is needed for your tooth.
Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded to match neighbouring teeth. The dentist will select the shade with you and check the appearance before cementing the final crown.
Call the office. Keep the temporary crown and avoid chewing on that side. In the meantime, the dentist may advise you on how to protect the tooth until it can be recemented.
Inlays and onlays restore teeth too damaged for a filling but not needing a full crown. Learn how Jarvis patients can find out if this conservative option fits their tooth.
A filling or crown that falls out leaves the tooth exposed. Jarvis patients can learn how to protect it, what to bring and how our Port Dover office approaches repair.
