Full coverage for a weakened tooth

A crown rebuilds the shape and strength of a tooth.

A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It is often recommended when a tooth is too damaged for a filling, after root canal treatment, to protect a cracked tooth or to improve the appearance of a misshapen or heavily stained one. A well-made crown restores chewing function and helps hold the remaining tooth together.

Hagersville patients can have crowns assessed and placed at our Port Dover office. Since crowns typically involve more than one appointment, the team can talk about spacing visits sensibly for the trip. You will know what each appointment involves before it begins.

Why a crown?

Crowns are recommended for specific clinical reasons.

  • Protecting weakened teeth

Teeth with large fillings, extensive decay or cracks may not have enough strength left to hold up to chewing. A crown wraps around the tooth, spreading forces and reducing the risk of the tooth splitting. Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are often crowned because they can become more brittle.

  • Other common reasons

Crowns are also used to restore badly worn teeth, cover dental implants, anchor bridges and improve the look of teeth with significant discolouration or unusual shape. The dentist will explain why a crown is recommended for your particular tooth and whether a smaller restoration, such as an onlay, could also work.

Choosing materials

The best material depends on the tooth and your bite.

Ceramic and zirconia options

All-ceramic and zirconia crowns can look very natural, which makes them popular for front teeth and visible areas. Some ceramics are stronger than others, so the dentist balances appearance with the forces each tooth handles. Shade matching considers your neighbouring teeth and any whitening you plan to do beforehand.

Metal and combined crowns

Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and need less removal of tooth structure, which can suit back teeth with heavy bite forces. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine strength with a tooth-coloured surface. Ask the dentist about the pros, cons and costs of each option for the specific tooth.

The process

Most crowns take two appointments.

  1. Preparing the tooth

After freezing, the dentist removes decay and shapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. If a lot of structure is missing, a core build-up may be needed first. An impression or scan is taken, and a temporary crown is placed. Allow enough time for this visit before setting out from Hagersville.

  2. Placing the final crown

The temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. Avoid sticky or hard foods on it. At the second visit, the temporary is removed, the new crown is tried in and adjusted for fit, bite and colour, then cemented. Mention anything that feels high or uncomfortable before you leave.

Living with it

A crown needs care just like a natural tooth.

Everyday care

The crown itself cannot decay, but the tooth underneath can, especially at the edge where crown meets tooth. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth every day. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can help protect the crown and your other teeth from cracking or wear.

Signs to report

Some sensitivity can occur for a short time after placement. Contact the office if the crown feels loose, the bite feels off, the gum around it becomes sore or swollen, or you notice a chip. Regular checkups let the dentist monitor the crown’s margins and the health of the tooth beneath.

Crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth while it is prepared, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some tenderness of the gum or mild sensitivity can follow for a few days. Contact the office if discomfort persists or worsens.

How long do crowns last?

Many crowns last for years, often well over a decade, with good care. Lifespan depends on the material, your bite, grinding, home care and the health of the tooth underneath. Regular checkups help catch problems early.

What if my temporary crown falls off?

Call the office for advice. Keep the temporary safe, and avoid chewing on that side. A small amount of temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may hold it briefly, but the dentist should reattach it properly to protect the tooth.

Will my crown match my other teeth?

Tooth-coloured crowns are shaded to blend with nearby teeth. If you are thinking about whitening, do it before the crown is made, because the crown will not change colour later. Discuss appearance concerns during planning.

Do I need a root canal before a crown?

Not always. Many crowned teeth have healthy nerves. A root canal is needed only if the nerve is infected, inflamed or badly damaged. The dentist will test the tooth and explain whether root canal treatment is necessary.
