Cover and protect

A crown holds a weakened tooth together so it can keep working.

Teeth with large fillings, cracks, root canal treatment or significant wear may not have enough strength to handle chewing forces on their own. A crown is a custom cap that covers the visible part of the tooth, restoring its shape and helping protect it from breaking further. Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, metal or combinations.

If you live in Forestville and have been told a tooth may need a crown, our Port Dover office can assess it and explain why. The dentist compares crowns with options like onlays, walks through the appointments and helps you understand how to care for the finished restoration.

Why a crown?

Crowns are recommended when a tooth needs more support than a filling can give.

  • Situations where crowns are common

Common reasons include a tooth that is cracked, broken or heavily filled, a back tooth after root canal treatment, severe wear from grinding or a tooth that is misshapen or discoloured. Crowns also cover dental implants and anchor bridges. The dentist explains which of these applies to your tooth and why a crown is being suggested.

  • Questions to ask before deciding

Ask whether an onlay or large filling might be enough, how much tooth will need to be shaped and what would happen if you waited. Understanding the risks of delay, such as the tooth splitting, helps you weigh the decision. A second opinion is always reasonable if you are unsure about a recommendation of this kind.

Choosing material

Material affects appearance, strength and tooth preparation.

All-ceramic and porcelain crowns

All-ceramic and porcelain crowns can be shaded to match natural teeth, making them a frequent choice for visible areas. Some modern ceramics are strong enough for back teeth too. The dentist explains which ceramic may suit your bite and whether grinding or clenching could affect how well the crown holds up over time under chewing forces.

Metal and combination crowns

Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and need less tooth reduction, which can be helpful for back teeth under heavy force. Porcelain fused to metal combines strength with a tooth-coloured surface. Ask the dentist to compare options for your specific tooth, considering appearance, longevity and the condition of opposing teeth that it will bite against.

The process

Most crowns take two appointments to complete.

  1. Preparation and a temporary crown

After freezing, the dentist removes decay and shapes the tooth to make room for the crown. A core build-up may be needed if much of the tooth is missing. Impressions or a scan are taken and a shade selected. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made at a dental laboratory.

  2. Fitting the permanent crown

At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown tried in. The dentist checks fit, bite and appearance before cementing it. Planning both appointments together can help when coming from Forestville. Mention if the temporary loosened or felt uncomfortable during the waiting period between visits, since that affects the final fitting appointment.

Aftercare

A crown still depends on healthy tooth and gum underneath.

The first few weeks

Mild sensitivity or tenderness around the gum is common at first. If the bite feels high or the tooth aches when chewing, call the office, since a small adjustment may help. Avoid very sticky foods with a temporary crown and chew carefully on the permanent crown until it feels natural, which usually happens within several days.

Protecting the crown long-term

Brush and floss around the crown daily, paying attention to the gumline where decay can start. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects, and ask about a night guard if you grind. Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine the crown margin and take X-rays when needed to check for problems beneath the crown that cannot be seen.

Planning your appointment

Arrange a crown assessment from Forestville.

Call our Port Dover office to have a damaged or heavily filled tooth checked. If a crown is recommended, the team can explain timing and help schedule both appointments together.

Bring any previous X-rays or treatment plans, and let the team know about jaw pain or grinding that could affect the crown.

Dental crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long do dental crowns last?

Many crowns last for years, often a decade or longer, with good care. Lifespan depends on the material, bite forces, grinding and home hygiene. The dentist can discuss realistic expectations for your crown and its location.

Does getting a crown hurt?

Preparation is done with local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles. Persistent pain should be checked by the dentist, since the bite may need a small adjustment.

Can a crowned tooth still get a cavity?

Yes. Decay can develop at the edge where the crown meets the natural tooth. Brushing, flossing and regular checkups help protect the crowned tooth from new decay. X-rays at intervals can reveal problems hidden beneath the crown edge.

What if my temporary crown falls off?

Call the office for advice. Keep the temporary safe and avoid chewing on that side. Temporary cement from a pharmacy may hold it briefly, but the team should recheck the fit soon afterward to protect the tooth.

Is a crown always needed after a root canal?

Back teeth often need a crown after root canal treatment because they are more prone to breaking. Front teeth sometimes do well with a filling. The dentist will advise based on your tooth and bite.
