A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. It is often recommended after a large filling, a crack, root canal treatment or significant wear, when the remaining tooth is too weak to withstand biting forces alone. Crowns can also improve appearance, but protecting the tooth is usually the main reason.
Crown treatment typically involves at least two visits, which Brantford patients can plan in advance with our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain why a crown is recommended, what material suits the tooth and how the temporary and final crown stages work, so the trips fit your schedule.

Why a crown?
Teeth with large fillings, cracks or root canal treatment can be prone to fracture. A crown wraps around the tooth, helping distribute biting forces and reducing the risk of breaking. The dentist uses examination and x-rays to judge how much healthy tooth remains and whether a crown would offer meaningful protection.
Sometimes an onlay, which covers only part of the tooth, can provide protection while preserving more natural structure. In other cases, a large filling may be adequate for now. Ask the dentist to explain why a full crown is recommended over these alternatives and what might happen if you choose to wait.
Material choices
All-ceramic and porcelain crowns can closely match natural tooth colour, making them common for front teeth and visible back teeth. Modern ceramics like zirconia are strong enough for many back teeth too. The dentist will consider your bite and any grinding habits when recommending a ceramic material.
Gold and other metal crowns are very durable and require less tooth reduction, which may suit back teeth under heavy forces. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine strength with a tooth-coloured surface. Each option has trade-offs in appearance, durability and cost that the dentist can explain in detail.
The appointments
At the first visit, the tooth is numbed and shaped to make room for the crown. Impressions or digital scans are taken, and a temporary crown is placed. Temporary crowns are less durable, so avoid sticky or hard foods on that side. Ask how long the laboratory phase is expected to take before booking the return trip from Brantford.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is checked for fit, colour and bite. Adjustments are made before it is cemented or bonded. Your bite should feel even when you close. If it feels high once numbness wears off, call so a quick adjustment can be arranged.
Living with a crown
Brush twice daily and floss around the crown, paying attention to the gumline where the crown meets the tooth. Decay can still develop at the margins. Regular cleanings allow the hygienist to remove buildup in hard-to-reach areas, and periodic x-rays can check for hidden problems beneath the crown.
Avoid chewing ice or very hard objects, and wear a night guard if you grind. Report sensitivity, looseness or a change in bite. Crowns can last many years with good care, but they may eventually need replacement. Regular exams allow the dentist to monitor the crown and the tooth beneath it.
Planning your appointment
Tell our Port Dover team which tooth needs a crown and whether another dentist has recommended one. We can arrange an exam or preparation appointment and outline the expected timeline.
Ask whether the preparation and fitting visits can be scheduled when you book, to make the two trips easier to plan.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
The tooth is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common, particularly while the temporary is in place, and usually settles. Persistent or worsening pain should be reported to the office.
Lifespan varies with the material, your bite forces, grinding habits, home care and the health of the tooth beneath. Many crowns last for years. Regular checkups and periodic x-rays help identify wear, decay at the edges or other problems early.
Call the office and keep the temporary in a safe container. Avoid chewing on that side, and pharmacy temporary cement may hold it briefly. The prepared tooth should not be left uncovered for long, as it can shift, break or become sensitive.
The dentist chooses a shade, and sometimes a level of translucency, to blend with nearby teeth. If you plan to whiten, do so before the crown is made, because crowns do not change colour with whitening and would no longer match.
Not always. Root canal treatment is only needed if the nerve is infected or irreversibly damaged. Many crowns are placed on teeth with healthy nerves simply to protect weakened structure, and the dentist will test the nerve beforehand.
Inlays and onlays sit between a filling and a crown. Brantford patients can learn when they fit best and how the two visits are planned at our Port Dover office.
Did a filling or crown come out? Brantford patients can learn how to protect the tooth, judge how soon to be seen and what repair may involve in Port Dover.
