A dental crown is a cap that covers the visible part of a tooth. Crowns are often recommended for teeth with very large fillings, cracks, significant wear or after root canal treatment, when the remaining structure needs reinforcement to withstand chewing. They can also improve the look of a misshapen or badly discoloured tooth that other treatments cannot correct.
If you are travelling from Bloomsburg, your crown is planned and placed at our Port Dover office, usually over two appointments. The dentist will explain why a crown is being suggested for that particular tooth, which materials might suit it and whether a more conservative restoration could reasonably do the same job.

Why a crown
When a tooth has lost much of its structure to decay, fracture or repeated fillings, the remaining walls can be at risk of splitting under biting pressure. A crown covers the tooth and holds it together. After root canal treatment, back teeth in particular are often crowned because they become more brittle and face heavy forces every time you chew.
Depending on the tooth, an onlay or a large bonded filling might preserve more natural structure while still offering protection. The dentist can explain why a full crown is recommended over these options, or when a conservative approach could work just as well. Ask about the expected lifespan and maintenance of each before deciding which way to go.
Materials
Crowns can be made from ceramic, porcelain fused to metal or metal alloys. Ceramic options can closely match neighbouring teeth, while metal crowns are very strong and need less tooth reduction, which can suit back teeth under heavy load. The dentist will explain the advantages and trade-offs of each in relation to the tooth being treated.
Front teeth usually benefit from a lifelike appearance, while back molars handle the bulk of chewing pressure. Grinding habits, how much space is available and the type of opposing teeth all influence material choice. The dentist will recommend an option that balances strength and appearance and explain why it fits your bite better than the alternatives.
The process
After numbing, the dentist removes decay and old filling material, rebuilds the core if necessary and shapes the tooth so the crown can fit over it. Impressions or a digital scan record the shape precisely, and a shade is selected for tooth-coloured materials. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made in a dental laboratory.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the new crown is checked for fit at the gumline, appearance and bite. Adjustments are made as needed before it is cemented or bonded in place. Tell the dentist if your bite feels high or uneven, because small changes at this stage can make a big difference in long-term comfort.
Aftercare
Temporary crowns are not as strong as the final one. Avoid sticky foods such as caramels and chewing gum, and chew more carefully on that side. When flossing, slide the floss out sideways instead of lifting it up. If the temporary comes off, keep it and call the office, since the prepared tooth can become sensitive and neighbouring teeth may shift slightly.
The tooth beneath a crown can still develop decay where the crown meets the root, so brushing along the gumline and cleaning between teeth remain important. A night guard may be suggested if you grind. Regular checkups let the dentist examine the crown margins and surrounding gums. Report any sensitivity, looseness or change in your bite between visits.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office from Bloomsburg to discuss a tooth that may need a crown. Mention any pain, earlier treatment on that tooth, or a recommendation you received from another dentist so it can be reviewed.
If you have recent X-rays from another office, ask about having them sent ahead so the dentist can review them before your appointment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
When much of the tooth is missing or weakened, a filling alone may not hold it together under chewing forces. A crown covers the tooth to help prevent it from breaking. The dentist will explain the reasoning using your tooth’s X-ray and examination findings.
Local anaesthetic keeps the tooth comfortable while it is prepared. Some sensitivity or gum tenderness afterward is common and usually settles within days. Let the office know if discomfort persists or seems to be getting worse rather than better.
Crowns can last many years with good care, but lifespan depends on the material, your bite, grinding habits and oral hygiene. Regular checkups help identify problems at the edges early, when they are easier to address.
Keep the temporary in a safe place and call the office. Avoid chewing on that side in the meantime. The dentist can usually re-cement it to protect the prepared tooth until the permanent crown arrives from the laboratory.
Yes. Decay can form where the crown meets the natural tooth, often near the gumline. Careful brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular dental visits help reduce this risk and catch any problems while they are still small.
When a filling is too small and a crown too much, an inlay or onlay may fit. Bloomsburg patients can learn how these restorations work at our Port Dover office.
A filling that falls out or a crown that comes loose leaves a tooth exposed. Bloomsburg patients can call our Port Dover office to arrange a prompt repair visit.
