When a tooth is lost, the gap can affect chewing and speech, and nearby teeth may slowly drift or tilt into the space. A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to crowns on the teeth beside the gap. Unlike a denture, it stays in place and is not removed for cleaning.
Walsingham residents considering a bridge can have their mouth assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check whether the neighbouring teeth are strong enough to act as supports and compare a bridge with alternatives such as an implant or a partial denture, so you can choose with all the information.

Is a bridge suitable?
The teeth on either side of the gap, called abutments, need sound roots, healthy gums and enough structure to hold crowns. The dentist examines them and takes X-rays to check bone levels and any decay. If the abutments already have large fillings or need crowns anyway, a bridge can be a practical way to restore them and replace the missing tooth together.
An implant replaces a tooth without involving neighbouring teeth, but it requires enough bone, healing time and surgery. A partial denture is removable and may suit some patients better. The dentist will explain the advantages, limitations, timeline and maintenance of each option so you can weigh them against your priorities.
Making the bridge
At the first visit, the supporting teeth are frozen and reshaped so crowns can fit over them. An impression or scan records the prepared teeth and the gap. The shade is chosen to blend with your natural teeth. A temporary bridge is usually placed to protect the prepared teeth and fill the space while the final bridge is made.
When the permanent bridge is ready, the temporary one is removed and the new bridge is tried in. The dentist checks the fit, appearance and bite, making adjustments as needed before cementing it. You will be shown how to clean underneath the replacement tooth, which is an important part of keeping the bridge healthy.
Adjusting
The supporting teeth may be sensitive to temperature for a short time after preparation and cementation. This often settles. If your bite feels uneven or the bridge feels high after the freezing wears off, contact the office so it can be adjusted. Persistent or worsening pain should also be reported.
Start with softer foods for the first day or so, then return to your normal diet. Avoid very sticky or hard foods that could stress the bridge or dislodge it. Chewing evenly on both sides helps spread forces. Over time, eating with the bridge should feel natural and comfortable.
Cleaning and care
Plaque can build up under the artificial tooth, known as the pontic, and around the crowns. Use a floss threader, super floss or small interdental brushes daily to clean beneath it, along with twice-daily brushing. Ask the hygienist to show you the technique, since this area is easy to miss and is where problems often begin.
Decay or gum disease on the supporting teeth is a common reason bridges fail. Regular checkups and cleanings allow the dentist to monitor these teeth and the bridge itself. Let the office know if the bridge feels loose, you notice a bad taste around it or the gum becomes sore, so problems can be addressed early.
Planning your appointment
When calling our Port Dover office, mention how long the tooth has been missing and whether you have considered an implant or partial denture. The team can arrange a consultation to compare options.
Bring any recent X-rays or treatment plans, and a list of medications. The team can outline how many visits the process is likely to involve.

With good care, many bridges last for years. Their lifespan depends on the health of the supporting teeth, home cleaning and regular dental visits. Decay or gum disease on abutment teeth can shorten it.
Local anaesthetic keeps you comfortable while the teeth are prepared. Some sensitivity or tenderness afterwards is common and usually settles. Contact the office if discomfort persists.
Each has advantages. A bridge avoids surgery but involves reshaping neighbouring teeth. An implant does not rely on other teeth but needs enough bone and healing time. The dentist will help you compare them.
Yes, but you need tools such as a floss threader or interdental brush to clean under the replacement tooth. The hygienist can show you how and suggest products that make it easier.
Call the office. Keep the bridge safe and avoid chewing on that side. A loose bridge may sometimes be recemented, but the dentist needs to check the supporting teeth for decay or damage first.
Wondering if a dental implant could replace a missing tooth? Walsingham patients can learn about suitability, bone health, staged treatment and long-term implant care.
Considering dentures? Walsingham residents can learn how the dentist decides on denture type, what everyday life with dentures is like and why regular checks still matter.
