Closing a gap

A bridge uses neighbouring teeth to support a replacement.

A traditional dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with an artificial tooth held in place by crowns on the teeth either side of the gap. Once cemented, it stays in the mouth and is cleaned much like natural teeth, with a few extra steps. Bridges can restore chewing, keep neighbouring teeth from drifting and improve appearance.

For patients in Vanessa, a bridge is generally planned and fitted over two or more visits to our Port Dover office. The dentist will discuss whether a bridge, an implant or a partial denture is the most sensible way to replace your missing tooth, given the condition of the teeth around the gap.

Is a bridge right

The health of nearby teeth shapes the choice.

When a bridge suits

Bridges work well when the teeth on either side of the gap are healthy and strong enough to support crowns, especially if they already have large fillings that would benefit from being crowned anyway. Healthy gums and adequate bone are also needed. The dentist examines the area and takes X-rays before recommending a bridge, and explains what those images show.

Comparing with implants and partials

An implant replaces a tooth without altering neighbouring teeth, but it involves minor surgery and months of healing. A removable partial denture usually costs less but can feel bulkier and needs to come out for cleaning. Each option has trade-offs in cost, time, maintenance and longevity, so ask the dentist to compare them for your particular situation.

Preparing

The first visit prepares the foundation.

  1. Shaping the support teeth

After numbing the area, the dentist reshapes the supporting teeth to make room for the crowns that will anchor the bridge. Any decay is removed and the teeth are built up if needed so they are strong enough. The shade of the replacement tooth is chosen in good light so it blends naturally with the rest of your smile.

  2. Impressions and a temporary

Impressions or a digital scan are taken and sent to a dental laboratory, where the bridge is made. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth and fill the gap in the meantime. Eat carefully with the temporary in place, avoid sticky foods that can pull it loose, and call the office if it comes off.

Fitting the bridge

The final bridge is checked before it is cemented.

Checking fit and bite

When the bridge comes back from the lab, the temporary is removed and the new bridge is tried in. The dentist checks how it fits at the gumline, how it touches the neighbouring teeth and how your bite meets it. Any adjustments are made before it is permanently cemented, and you will be asked how it feels.

Learning to clean under it

Food can collect under the replacement tooth, so you will be shown how to clean there using a floss threader, special floss or a small interdental brush. This daily step matters a great deal, because decay or gum disease on the supporting teeth is one of the most common reasons bridges eventually fail and need replacing.

Long-term care

Good care protects both the bridge and its supports.

  • Daily cleaning habits

Brush twice a day, clean under the bridge every day and keep up regular professional cleanings. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or very hard foods on the bridge, since porcelain can chip. If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard may help protect the bridge and the supporting teeth from heavy forces over the long term.

  • Checkups and watching for problems

At checkups the dentist examines the supporting teeth, the surrounding gums and the bridge itself for wear or loosening. Call the office if the bridge feels loose, a supporting tooth becomes sensitive, or you notice a bad taste or smell around it. Early attention often prevents a small problem from becoming a much bigger one.

Planning your appointment

Planning a bridge from Vanessa

Call our Port Dover office to discuss replacing a missing tooth. An examination and X-rays help the dentist explain whether a bridge is suitable for you and how many visits to expect from start to finish.

If the tooth was lost recently, mention when it happened, since healing time may affect when a bridge can be made and fitted.

Dental bridge questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a dental bridge last?

Many bridges last for years with good care. Lifespan depends on the health of the supporting teeth, daily cleaning under the bridge and the biting forces it faces. Regular checkups help catch problems early, before the bridge or its supports are damaged.

Is getting a bridge painful?

The teeth are numbed while they are being prepared, so the procedure itself should be comfortable. Some sensitivity or tenderness afterward is common and usually settles within days. Over-the-counter pain relief, taken as directed, can help in the meantime.

How do I clean under a bridge?

Use floss threaders, special thick floss or small interdental brushes to clean under the false tooth every day. The hygienist can demonstrate the technique and help you choose tools that are comfortable for your hands and the shape of your bridge.

Can I eat normally with a bridge?

Most people return to normal eating once the bridge is permanently cemented. It is still wise to avoid very hard foods, such as ice or hard candy, that could chip the porcelain or put excessive stress on the supporting teeth.

Is a bridge better than an implant?

Neither option is better in every case. The best choice depends on the condition of neighbouring teeth, available bone, your general health, budget and personal preferences. The dentist will explain the trade-offs so you can decide with full information.
