When a tooth is lost, neighbouring teeth can tip into the space and the opposing tooth may drift. A fixed bridge uses crowns on the adjacent teeth to support an artificial tooth in the gap. It is cemented in place, so it is not removed for cleaning, and it can restore chewing and appearance.
Turkey Point residents considering a bridge can start with an assessment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check the supporting teeth and gums and explain how a bridge compares with implants or a partial denture.

Is a bridge suitable
The teeth on either side of the gap need healthy roots and enough structure to carry crowns. If they already have large fillings, a bridge may also strengthen them. If they are untouched and healthy, it is worth weighing the fact that they must be reshaped. Gum health and bone support around them are checked as well.
Implants replace a tooth without involving neighbouring teeth, though they require surgery and healing time. Partial dentures are removable and may suit several missing teeth. The dentist will explain how each option fits your mouth, health and preferences, along with differences in maintenance and longevity, so you can make an informed choice.
Preparing the teeth
After numbing, the dentist reshapes the teeth on either side of the gap to make room for crowns. Any decay is removed and the teeth are built up if needed. This step is permanent, which is one reason the decision deserves careful thought. Ask questions beforehand if you are unsure about any part of the process.
Impressions or a digital scan record the prepared teeth, the gap and your bite so the bridge can be made to fit. A shade is chosen to match surrounding teeth. A temporary bridge protects the prepared teeth while the final one is fabricated. Avoid sticky or very hard foods on the temporary to keep it secure.
Fitting the bridge
At the fitting appointment, the temporary is removed and the new bridge is tried in. The dentist checks how it seats, how your bite feels and whether the colour and shape blend in. Once you and the dentist are satisfied, it is cemented. Mention any pressure, high spots or concerns before cementation if possible.
Because the artificial tooth sits above the gum, food and plaque can collect underneath. The team will show you how to clean beneath the bridge using floss threaders, special floss or small brushes. This daily step is important for protecting the anchor teeth and gums from decay and inflammation.
Long-term care
Brush twice daily and clean under the bridge every day. Limit sugary snacks that increase decay risk around crown edges. Avoid using your teeth to open packages or chewing very hard items. If you grind your teeth, ask whether a night guard would help protect the bridge and your other teeth.
Regular exams and cleanings allow the dentist to check the margins of the crowns, the health of the gums and the condition of the bridge. Contact the office if the bridge feels loose, you notice a bad taste around it or one of the anchor teeth becomes sensitive or sore.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to discuss replacing a missing tooth. Mention how long the tooth has been gone and whether you have already considered implants or dentures.
Bring X-rays or treatment plans from another dentist if available. Allow time in your schedule for at least two appointments plus healing if extractions are needed.

Usually at least two: one to prepare the teeth and take impressions, and one to fit the final bridge. Additional visits may be needed if other treatment is required first.
No. A traditional bridge is cemented in place. You clean around and under it daily with special floss or brushes, which the team will demonstrate.
Many bridges last for years with good care and regular checkups. Lifespan depends on oral hygiene, bite forces and the health of the supporting teeth.
Neither is best for everyone. Bridges avoid surgery but involve neighbouring teeth; implants stand alone but need adequate bone and healing time. The dentist can help you compare them.
Decay or gum disease around an anchor tooth can affect the whole bridge. Regular checkups help catch issues early. Contact the office if you notice sensitivity or a bad taste.
Implants can replace missing teeth with a fixed, root-like support. Turkey Point patients can learn about candidacy, healing stages and upkeep at our Port Dover office.
Thinking about dentures? Turkey Point residents can learn how dentures are planned, what adjusting feels like and how to care for them, with visits in Port Dover.
