Caring for St. Williams patients at our office in Port Dover
Every dental service for St. WilliamsSpanning the gap
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with an artificial tooth, called a pontic, held in place by crowns on the teeth on either side or by implants. Unlike a removable denture, a bridge stays in the mouth. It can restore chewing, help keep neighbouring teeth from drifting and fill a visible gap in your smile.
If you are missing a tooth and live in or around St. Williams, our Port Dover dentists can examine the gap and supporting teeth and explain whether a bridge, an implant or a partial denture would be the most suitable approach for you.

Evaluating the gap
The teeth next to the gap must be healthy and strong enough to hold crowns. If they already have large fillings, a bridge may also help protect them. If they are untouched and healthy, preparing them for crowns means removing sound enamel, which is an important consideration. X-rays help check roots and bone.
Healthy gums are essential, as bridges can be harder to clean around than natural teeth. Any gum disease should be treated first. If bone has shrunk where the tooth was lost, the dentist will explain how that may affect the look of the replacement tooth and whether other options might suit you better.
Types and choices
A traditional bridge uses crowns on both neighbouring teeth. A cantilever bridge is anchored on one side only, while resin-bonded bridges attach to the back of nearby teeth with less preparation. Implant-supported bridges are anchored by implants rather than natural teeth and are often used when several teeth are missing.
A single implant avoids altering neighbouring teeth but requires surgery and healing time. A partial denture is removable and usually less costly but may feel less stable. The dentist can explain the advantages, limits and maintenance of each option so you can decide what fits your health, preferences and budget.
Treatment steps
At the first visit, the supporting teeth are numbed and shaped to make room for crowns. Impressions or scans are taken and sent to a laboratory. A temporary bridge protects the prepared teeth while the permanent one is made. Treat the temporary gently and avoid sticky foods that could dislodge it.
When the bridge returns, the dentist checks its fit, colour and bite before cementing it in place. Small adjustments may be made to ensure comfort. You will be shown how to clean under the false tooth, which is important for keeping the supporting teeth and gums healthy.
Long-term care
Food and plaque can collect under the pontic. Use floss threaders, special floss or small brushes to clean beneath it every day. Brush around the crowns carefully, especially near the gum line. Decay or gum disease around the anchor teeth is a common reason bridges eventually need replacing.
Regular checkups let the dentist inspect the bridge, the supporting teeth and the gums. Bridges can last many years with good care, though eventual replacement is common. Report looseness, pain, a bad taste or a change in your bite promptly so problems can be addressed early.

Many bridges last for years with good home care and regular checkups. Their lifespan depends on the health of the supporting teeth and gums. Decay under the crowns is a common reason for replacement.
Neither is best for everyone. A bridge avoids surgery but involves preparing neighbouring teeth. An implant does not rely on nearby teeth but requires healing time and adequate bone. The dentist can compare them for you.
Teeth are numbed during preparation. Some sensitivity afterward is common and typically settles. If discomfort persists or the bite feels uneven, the office can check and adjust the bridge.
Most people return to normal eating after a short adjustment period. Avoid very hard or sticky foods that could damage the bridge, and chew carefully at first while you get used to it.
Use floss threaders, super floss or small interdental brushes to clean under the false tooth daily. The hygienist can show you the technique that works best for your bridge.
Implants replace a tooth root to support a crown, bridge or denture. St. Williams patients can learn about candidacy, healing time and the steps involved in Port Dover.
