Spanning the gap

A bridge anchors a replacement tooth to the teeth on either side.

When a tooth is lost, the neighbouring teeth can gradually drift into the space and the opposing tooth may move too. A traditional bridge fills the gap with a false tooth held in place by crowns on the adjacent teeth. It is fixed in the mouth, so it does not come out for cleaning the way a partial denture does.

Renton residents can explore whether a bridge is a good choice at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check the supporting teeth, gums and bite, and explain how a bridge compares with an implant or a removable partial for your particular situation and long-term goals.

Is a bridge suitable?

A bridge depends on strong neighbouring teeth.

Checking the anchor teeth

The teeth on either side of the gap need healthy roots and enough structure to support crowns. The dentist checks them for decay, cracks and gum disease, often using X-rays. If those teeth already have large fillings, crowning them may also protect them. If they are untouched, the trade-off of preparing healthy enamel is worth discussing.

Comparing with other options

An implant replaces the missing root and does not rely on neighbouring teeth, but it involves surgery and healing time and depends on bone and health factors. A removable partial denture is another option, often less involved but less stable. The dentist will outline the pros and considerations of each so you can compare fairly.

Preparing the teeth

The first bridge appointment prepares the anchor teeth.

  1. Shaping the supporting teeth

After numbing the area, the dentist reshapes the supporting teeth so the crowns can fit over them. This removes a layer of enamel and some underlying tooth. If a supporting tooth has a large old filling or decay, that is addressed at the same time. The dentist will explain each step as it happens in the chair.

  2. Impressions and a temporary

Impressions or a digital scan record the shape of the prepared teeth and your bite. A shade is chosen to match neighbouring teeth. A temporary bridge is usually placed to protect the teeth and fill the gap while the permanent bridge is made. Follow instructions about eating and cleaning around it carefully until the final visit.

Fitting the bridge

The final bridge is adjusted before it is cemented.

Checking fit and bite

At the second appointment the temporary is removed, and the permanent bridge is tried in. The dentist checks how it fits along the gum, how it looks and how your teeth meet when you bite and chew. Small adjustments may be made. Let the dentist know if anything feels high or uncomfortable when you close.

Cementing in place

Once you and the dentist are satisfied, the bridge is cemented onto the supporting teeth. The dentist will show you how to clean beneath the false tooth using floss threaders or small brushes. You may notice a different feeling in your mouth for a few days while you adjust to the new shape and bite.

Long-term care

A bridge relies on healthy teeth and gums to last.

  • Cleaning under the bridge

Food and plaque can collect under the false tooth, so daily cleaning there is essential. Floss threaders, super floss or interdental brushes reach the space. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. A water flosser may also help some people. The hygienist can recommend the tools that work best for your bridge and hands. Ask for a demonstration.

  • Protecting the supports

Decay or gum disease around the supporting teeth is a common reason bridges fail. Regular checkups and cleanings allow early detection. Avoid chewing ice or very hard foods on the bridge. If it feels loose, if you notice a bad taste or if the gum around it is sore, call the office for an assessment.

Dental bridge questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a dental bridge last?

Many bridges last for years with good care, but longevity varies. The health of the supporting teeth, gum condition and daily cleaning all play a role. Regular checkups help the dentist catch problems early on.

Does getting a bridge hurt?

The area is numbed during preparation, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles. Let the dentist know if discomfort persists beyond the first week or two.

Can I eat normally with a bridge?

Most people return to a normal diet once they adjust. Avoid very hard or sticky foods that could damage the bridge. Cut tougher foods into smaller pieces if needed, especially at first, while you get used to it.

Is a bridge better than an implant?

Neither is best for everyone. Bridges avoid surgery but involve preparing neighbouring teeth, while implants preserve neighbours but require surgery and healing. The dentist will help you weigh the options for your situation and health.

What happens if a supporting tooth gets decay?

Decay under a bridge crown may require removing the bridge to treat the tooth. Sometimes a new bridge is needed. Careful cleaning and regular checkups reduce this risk considerably over time. Floss threaders make cleaning under the bridge easier.
