When one or a few teeth are missing in a row, a dental bridge can fill the space with an artificial tooth, called a pontic, attached to crowns on the teeth on either side. The bridge is cemented in place and is not removed at home. It can restore chewing, support the bite and prevent nearby teeth from drifting into the gap.
Pine Grove patients thinking about a bridge can discuss it at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check the health of the teeth that would support it and compare a bridge with other replacement options before you decide.

Why replace a tooth
Over time, teeth beside a gap can tilt into the space and the opposing tooth can drift upward. This may change your bite, create food traps and make cleaning harder. Chewing may shift to the other side, placing more strain there. In visible areas, a gap can also affect how comfortable you feel smiling and speaking.
Not every gap must be filled immediately, and some people manage well without replacement. The dentist can explain what changes are likely in your case and how quickly they might happen. That information helps you decide whether to replace the tooth now, later or not at all.
Comparing options
A bridge is fixed, feels similar to natural teeth and is usually completed in a few weeks without surgery. It can be a good choice when the neighbouring teeth already have large fillings or crowns, since preparing them adds protection. The trade-off is that healthy enamel on those teeth must be reduced to fit the crowns.
An implant replaces the tooth without involving neighbours but requires surgery, healing time and adequate bone. A removable partial denture is less invasive and can replace several teeth but may feel less stable. The dentist will compare cost considerations, timelines and maintenance for each so you can choose with full information.
Getting a bridge
At the first visit, the supporting teeth are numbed and shaped to make room for crowns. Impressions or scans are taken and sent to a dental laboratory along with shade information. A temporary bridge protects the prepared teeth in the meantime. Avoid sticky and hard foods while the temporary is in place.
At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent bridge is tried in. The dentist checks the fit, colour and bite before cementing it. You will be shown how to clean under the false tooth with floss threaders or small brushes. A follow-up check may be suggested after you have used it for a while.
Caring for it
Food and plaque can collect under the pontic, so daily cleaning there is essential. Floss threaders, super floss, interdental brushes or water flossers can reach the area. Ask the hygienist to show you which tool works best for your bridge. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, paying attention to the gumline around the crowns.
The supporting teeth can still develop decay or gum disease, which may put the bridge at risk. Regular checkups and cleanings help catch problems early. Avoid chewing ice or very hard foods, and mention grinding so a night guard can be considered. Report looseness, sensitivity or a bad taste promptly.
Planning your appointment
Book a consultation at our Port Dover office to talk about replacing a missing tooth. The dentist will examine the area and explain whether a bridge or another option suits you.
Bring any recent X-rays or dental records and a list of medications. Note how long the tooth has been missing if you know.

Many bridges last for years, but lifespan depends on the health of the supporting teeth, daily cleaning and bite forces. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor it and spot problems early.
Most people return to normal eating once they are used to it. Avoid very hard or sticky foods that might damage the bridge, and clean carefully under the false tooth after meals.
The supporting teeth are numbed during preparation. Mild sensitivity or gum tenderness afterward is common and usually settles. Persistent pain or a high bite should be reported for adjustment.
Neither is better for everyone. A bridge avoids surgery but involves neighbouring teeth. An implant stands alone but needs healthy bone and healing time. The dentist will help you compare them.
Decay or gum disease on a supporting tooth can affect the whole bridge. Treatment may involve repairing or replacing it. Keeping up with cleanings and checkups helps catch issues before they become serious.
Implants replace a tooth root and support a crown, bridge or denture. Pine Grove patients can learn about candidacy, healing stages and long-term implant care.
Considering dentures? Pine Grove residents can read how dentures are fitted, what adjusting feels like and how daily cleaning and checkups protect comfort.
