Spanning the gap

A bridge relies on neighbouring teeth to replace a missing one.

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth to crowns on the teeth beside the gap. It is not removed at night, which many people appreciate. The trade-off is that supporting teeth must be shaped and carry extra load, so their health matters a great deal.

If you are missing a tooth and live at Peacock Point full-time or seasonally, you can discuss a bridge at our Port Dover office. Since treatment spans more than one visit, mention your schedule so the appointments can be arranged without long gaps between steps.

Comparing options

Look at the whole picture before choosing a bridge.

When a bridge may suit you

A bridge may be suitable when the teeth next to the gap are healthy enough to support crowns, especially if they already have large fillings that could benefit from coverage. It offers a fixed solution that can restore chewing and appearance. The dentist examines bone, gums and bite to decide whether the supporting teeth can handle the extra demand.

Other replacement choices

Implants replace a tooth without involving neighbouring teeth but require adequate bone and surgery. Partial dentures are removable and may suit several gaps. Leaving the space open is also an option in some cases. Ask the dentist to compare each choice in terms of preparation, maintenance, longevity and what happens to adjacent teeth over time.

Preparation

The first visit prepares the supporting teeth.

  1. Shaping the anchor teeth

After numbing the area, the dentist reshapes the teeth on either side of the gap to make room for crowns. Any decay is removed and weak areas may be built up. This step is permanent, since enamel removed to fit the crowns does not grow back, which is why the decision should be made carefully beforehand.

  2. Impressions and a temporary bridge

Impressions or scans are taken so the bridge can be made to fit precisely. A temporary bridge is usually placed to protect the prepared teeth and fill the gap. It is not as strong as the final bridge, so avoid sticky or hard foods on it and contact the office if it comes loose.

Placement

The final bridge is adjusted before it is fixed in place.

Checking fit and bite

At the next visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent bridge tried in. The dentist checks how it fits against the gums, how your teeth come together and whether the colour blends. Speak up if something feels off. Adjustments are much easier at this stage than after the bridge has been cemented.

Cementing the bridge

Once you and the dentist are satisfied, the bridge is cemented onto the prepared teeth. Excess cement is cleaned away and the bite checked again. You may feel some sensitivity in the supporting teeth for a while. Ask the team to show you how to clean beneath the false tooth before you leave.

Maintenance

Daily cleaning is key to a long-lasting bridge.

  • Clean under and around the bridge

Food and plaque collect under the false tooth, where a regular toothbrush cannot reach. Floss threaders, small interdental brushes or water flossers help clean this area. Brush the supporting crowns carefully at the gumline. Neglecting these spots can lead to decay or gum disease that puts the whole bridge at risk.

  • Protect the supporting teeth

The anchor teeth carry extra load, so keep regular checkups and cleanings. The dentist will check the margins of the crowns, gum health and bite. If you notice looseness, pain, a bad taste or swelling near the bridge, contact the office. Night guards may be suggested if grinding could damage the restoration.

Dental bridge questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a bridge last?

Many bridges last for years with good care, though longevity depends on the health of the supporting teeth, home cleaning and bite forces. Regular checkups help identify problems early so they can be addressed.

Is getting a bridge painful?

Local anaesthetic is used while the supporting teeth are prepared. Some sensitivity or gum tenderness afterward is common and usually settles. Contact the office if discomfort persists or worsens.

Can I eat normally with a bridge?

Once the final bridge is in place and any sensitivity has settled, most people can eat a wide range of foods. Avoid very hard or sticky items that could damage the bridge or loosen it.

Why not just leave the gap?

Gaps can allow neighbouring teeth to tilt and opposing teeth to drift, affecting your bite over time. In some cases, leaving a space is acceptable. The dentist can explain the likely effects for your particular gap.

Bridge or implant: which is better?

Each has benefits. Implants avoid involving neighbouring teeth but require surgery and enough bone. Bridges are fixed without surgery but rely on adjacent teeth. The dentist can compare them for your situation.
