Closing the gap

A bridge relies on the teeth on either side of the space.

A traditional dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with a false tooth held in place by crowns on the neighbouring teeth. Because it is cemented, it does not come out like a denture. Bridges can restore chewing, help maintain the position of nearby teeth and fill a visible gap, but they do require reshaping the supporting teeth.

Our Port Dover office helps patients from Fishers Glen decide whether a bridge makes sense for their gap. The dentist will examine the supporting teeth and gums, compare the bridge with implant and denture options, and explain the steps and long-term care involved, so you can weigh the choice with a full picture in front of you.

Is a bridge suitable?

Strong anchor teeth are essential.

  • Condition of the neighbouring teeth

The teeth on each side of the gap must be healthy enough to support crowns and the added load of the replacement tooth. If they already have large fillings, a bridge may also strengthen them. If they are untouched and healthy, you may prefer an option that does not involve reshaping them, and the dentist will discuss that trade-off openly with you.

  • Gum and bone health

The dentist checks the gums for disease and may take X-rays to assess roots and bone. Ongoing gum problems or significant bone loss can affect how well a bridge performs over time. Any active decay or infection is usually treated first. Starting from a stable base gives the bridge the best chance of lasting and keeps the anchor teeth healthy.

Comparing options

Each replacement has different trade-offs.

Bridges versus implants

An implant replaces the root and does not depend on neighbouring teeth, but it involves surgery and healing time and depends on adequate bone. A bridge is often completed sooner without surgery but requires preparing adjacent teeth. The dentist can explain which factors favour one or the other in your mouth, including your health and how long the gap has been there.

Bridges versus partial dentures

A removable partial denture can replace several teeth and is less invasive to adjacent teeth, but it comes out for cleaning and may feel bulkier. Some people prefer the fixed feel of a bridge. Ask about comfort, appearance, cleaning and expected lifespan for each choice. Hearing the pros and cons side by side often makes the decision clearer.

Treatment steps

A bridge typically takes two main appointments.

  1. Preparing and recording

After freezing, the anchor teeth are reshaped to make room for crowns. Impressions or scans are taken so the bridge can be custom made, and a shade is selected to blend with your teeth. The dentist explains what to expect at each stage. If you plan to whiten, mention it now, because the bridge will not change colour later.

  2. Temporary then permanent

A temporary bridge protects the prepared teeth while the permanent one is made. Avoid sticky foods while it is in place. At the second visit, the permanent bridge is tried in, adjusted for fit and bite, and cemented. Let the dentist know if the bite feels uneven or the bridge presses on the gum, so adjustments can be made before you leave.

Maintaining it

Bridges need specific cleaning to last.

Cleaning under the bridge

Food and plaque can collect under the false tooth. Use floss threaders, super floss or interdental brushes to clean underneath daily. The hygienist can demonstrate the technique. Decay or gum disease around anchor teeth is a common reason bridges fail, so careful cleaning matters. It may feel fiddly at first, but most people get the hang of it within a week or two.

Regular monitoring

Keep regular checkups so the dentist can inspect the edges of the crowns and the health of the supporting teeth. Avoid chewing ice or very hard objects. If the bridge feels loose, the bite changes or you notice pain or a bad taste around it, contact the office. Problems caught early are usually easier to manage.

Dental bridge questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a bridge last?

Many bridges last for years with good care, but lifespan varies with home care, bite forces and the health of the anchor teeth. Regular checkups help catch problems early before the bridge needs replacement, and careful cleaning underneath makes a real difference.

Will a bridge look natural?

Bridges are designed to match the shape and shade of your teeth. Porcelain and ceramic options can look very natural. The dentist will discuss material choices and how they affect appearance and strength, especially for a bridge near the front of the mouth.

Does getting a bridge hurt?

Local anaesthetic is used while preparing the anchor teeth, so most people feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles within days. Contact the office if discomfort persists, worsens or makes it hard to chew.

Can I eat normally with a bridge?

Most people return to a normal diet once the permanent bridge is placed. Avoid very hard or sticky foods that might stress or loosen it, especially in the first days and while wearing the temporary bridge, which is not as strong.

What if I wait to replace the tooth?

Over time, neighbouring teeth may drift or tilt into the space, and opposing teeth can over-erupt. This can complicate later replacement and affect your bite. The dentist can explain the likely effects in your situation and how urgent replacement is.
