Filling the gap

A bridge spans the space left by a missing tooth.

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with an artificial tooth held in place by crowns on the teeth either side, or sometimes by implants. Unlike a denture, a traditional bridge is fixed in place and is not removed for cleaning. It can restore chewing, help speech and prevent neighbouring teeth from drifting into the gap.

For anyone in Boston with a missing tooth, a bridge consultation at our Port Dover office is a good place to compare options. The dentist will look at the gap, the health of nearby teeth and your preferences before recommending a bridge, an implant or another approach.

Is a bridge right

The health of the neighbouring teeth matters a great deal.

When a bridge makes sense

Bridges are often suggested when the teeth beside the gap are healthy enough to support crowns, or already need crowns because of large fillings or cracks. Gum health and bone levels are also considered carefully. If the supporting teeth are weak, loose or have active decay or gum disease, other options may be safer and more likely to last.

Comparing alternatives

Implants replace a tooth without involving the neighbouring teeth at all, while partial dentures are removable and can replace several teeth across an arch. Each choice has its own benefits, timelines and maintenance needs. Ask the dentist to compare them for your specific gap, so the decision reflects your mouth, your health and your own priorities.

Preparing

Bridges are usually made over two or more appointments.

  1. Shaping the supporting teeth

At the first visit, the supporting teeth are numbed and reshaped so crowns can fit over them. Impressions or a digital scan record the area so the bridge can be made to fit precisely against the gum and the opposing teeth. The shade of the replacement tooth is chosen to match the teeth nearby, and you can comment on it.

  2. Temporary bridge

A temporary bridge is usually placed to protect the prepared teeth and fill the gap while the permanent bridge is being made. It is less sturdy than the final version, so avoid sticky or very hard foods on that side. If it loosens, cracks or comes out, contact the office so it can be recemented promptly and the teeth stay protected.

Fitting

The final bridge is adjusted for comfort and function.

  • Checking the fit and bite

When the bridge is ready, the dentist checks the fit, colour and bite before cementing it in place. You may be asked to bite on marking paper so any high spots can be smoothed. The bridge should feel natural when you close your teeth together; mention anything that feels uneven, tight or catches your tongue.

  • Learning to clean under it

Food and plaque can collect under the replacement tooth, so special cleaning is needed every day. The team will show you how to use floss threaders, interdental brushes or a water flosser to clean beneath the bridge. This step is important for keeping the supporting teeth and the gums around them healthy for the long term.

Long term

Good care helps a bridge serve well for years.

Daily care

Brush twice daily, clean under the bridge every day and limit sugary snacks between meals. The supporting teeth can still develop decay at the edges of the crowns, so careful cleaning there matters. Avoid chewing ice or hard objects that could chip porcelain or loosen the bridge, and mention any grinding habit to the dentist.

Regular reviews

Regular checkups allow the dentist to inspect the bridge, the supporting teeth and the gums around them. X-rays may be used from time to time to check for hidden decay underneath. If the bridge feels loose, you notice a bad taste or the gum becomes sore or swollen, contact the office rather than waiting for the next visit.

Planning your appointment

Discussing a bridge from Boston

Phone our Port Dover office to arrange a consultation about replacing a missing tooth. Let the team know how long the tooth has been missing and whether the nearby teeth have had any treatment.

If you have x-rays or records from another dentist, ask how they can be shared with the office ahead of your appointment.

Bridge questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does a dental bridge last?

Many bridges last for years with good care and regular checkups. Longevity depends on the health of the supporting teeth, daily cleaning under the bridge and the biting forces involved, including any grinding habit you may have.

Does getting a bridge hurt?

The teeth are numbed during preparation, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some sensitivity afterward is common and usually settles within days or weeks. Contact the office if discomfort persists or gets worse.

Can I eat normally with a bridge?

Most people return to normal eating once they have adjusted to the bridge. Avoid very hard or sticky foods that might damage it, and remember to clean under the replacement tooth every day to protect the supporting teeth.

Is a bridge better than an implant?

Neither is better for everyone. A bridge involves the neighbouring teeth, while an implant does not but requires surgery and healing time. The dentist will compare both based on your teeth, bone, health and preferences.

What happens if a supporting tooth gets a cavity?

Decay under a bridge crown may require removing and replacing the bridge so the tooth can be treated. Regular checkups and careful cleaning at the edges of the crowns help catch problems early, while they are easier to manage.
