Spanning the gap

A bridge relies on the teeth beside the space, so their health matters too.

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth to crowns placed on the neighbouring teeth. It is fixed in place, so it does not come out for cleaning. Bridges can restore chewing, steady the bite and fill a visible gap, but their long-term success depends heavily on the strength of the teeth holding them up.

Patients who live in Bloomsburg can talk through bridge treatment at our Port Dover office. The dentist will compare a bridge with an implant and with removable options, explain how the neighbouring teeth would be prepared, and outline how many appointments are likely so the visits can be planned around work and home.

Weigh the options

Several approaches can replace a missing tooth.

How a bridge compares

An implant replaces both root and crown without relying on neighbouring teeth, while a removable partial denture can replace several teeth and comes out for cleaning. A bridge offers a fixed result but requires reshaping the adjacent teeth for crowns. The dentist can explain these trade-offs clearly so you can choose what suits your mouth, health and priorities.

Health of the supporting teeth

The teeth that anchor a bridge need sound roots, healthy gums and good bone support. If they already carry large fillings, crowning them can also reinforce them. If they are untouched and healthy, reshaping them is a significant step worth weighing carefully. X-rays and a gum assessment help the dentist judge whether a bridge is likely to stay stable.

Preparation

The first visit prepares the supporting teeth.

  1. Shaping the anchor teeth

After numbing, the dentist reshapes the neighbouring teeth so crowns can fit over them. Any decay is removed and weak areas are built up if needed. The shade of the new bridge is chosen to match your surrounding teeth. This is a good moment to ask questions about the appearance, length and shape of the replacement tooth before records are taken.

  2. Impressions and a temporary bridge

Impressions or a digital scan are sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge is made. A temporary bridge is usually placed to protect the prepared teeth and fill the space in the meantime. Avoid sticky or very hard foods on the temporary, and call the office if it loosens or comes off, since the prepared teeth can shift or become sensitive.

Fitting

The final bridge is checked carefully before it is fixed.

Checking fit and bite

At the second appointment the temporary is removed and the new bridge is tried in. The dentist checks how it sits along the gums, how it looks beside your other teeth and how your bite meets it. Small adjustments can be made at this stage. Speak up if anything feels high, tight or uncomfortable, since changes are easiest before cementing.

Cementing in place

Once you and the dentist are satisfied, the bridge is cemented onto the anchor teeth. You will be shown how to clean under the false tooth, which is essential for keeping the gums and supporting teeth healthy. Some sensitivity to temperature may occur for the first few days and usually settles without any further treatment being needed.

Long-term care

The supporting teeth need protection to keep the bridge secure.

  • Cleaning under the bridge

Food and plaque can collect beneath the replacement tooth. Floss threaders, small interdental brushes or a water flosser can help clean that area each day. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, paying attention to where the crowns meet the gums. If decay or gum disease develops on an anchor tooth, the whole bridge can be put at risk.

  • Regular checks

Regular checkups and cleanings let the dentist monitor the bridge, the gums and the anchor teeth over time. Report any looseness, pain, bad taste or puffy gums around the bridge. With consistent care, a bridge can serve for many years, although eventually it may need to be replaced as the supporting teeth and materials age.

Planning your appointment

Discuss replacing a tooth.

Contact our Port Dover office from Bloomsburg to arrange a consultation about a missing tooth. Mention how long the space has been there and whether you have already considered an implant, denture or other replacement.

If you have recent X-rays from another dental office, ask whether they can be sent before your appointment to help with planning.

Bridge questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How many visits does a bridge take?

Usually at least two: one to prepare the anchor teeth and take impressions, and another to fit and cement the final bridge. Extra visits may be needed if decay, gum treatment or other work has to be completed first.

Is a bridge better than an implant?

Each has advantages. An implant does not depend on neighbouring teeth, while a bridge avoids surgery and may be completed sooner. The dentist can explain which may suit your health, bone levels, budget considerations and personal preferences.

How do I clean under a bridge?

Floss threaders, interdental brushes or a water flosser can reach beneath the replacement tooth. The hygienist can demonstrate the technique on your own bridge and suggest the tool you are most likely to use every day.

Will the bridge look natural?

The bridge is shaded and shaped to blend with your teeth. You can discuss its appearance before impressions are taken, and both the fit and the look are checked at the try-in before the bridge is permanently cemented.

Can a bridge come loose?

It can, especially if an anchor tooth develops decay underneath or the cement breaks down over time. Contact the office if your bridge feels loose or moves, so it can be examined promptly before more damage occurs.
