A conservative fix

Bonding can reshape and repair teeth with little removal of enamel.

Dental bonding involves applying a tooth-coloured composite resin to the surface of a tooth, sculpting it and hardening it with a curing light. It can repair chips, close small gaps, cover minor discolouration or lengthen a short tooth. Because it usually requires little or no drilling, it is often considered a conservative cosmetic or repair option.

For Windham Centre residents interested in bonding, our Port Dover office can assess the tooth and discuss whether bonding is likely to give the look and durability you want. The dentist will also explain maintenance and how bonding compares with options such as veneers or reshaping.

Is bonding suitable

Bonding suits small to moderate changes.

Repairs bonding handles well

Chipped edges, small spaces between front teeth, minor shape irregularities, exposed root surfaces and some stains can often be improved with bonding. It can also be used to repair small cavities. The procedure is usually completed in one visit, making it a practical choice for people who want a visible improvement without multiple appointments or lab work.

Situations needing another option

Large restorations, teeth under heavy biting forces or significant discolouration may be better treated with crowns or veneers. Bonding may also be less suitable for people who grind heavily, since edges can chip. The dentist will explain the expected lifespan and whether another approach might give a more durable result for your situation and budget.

Preparing

Planning helps the bonding match your smile.

Shade selection and whitening

Composite is matched to the shade of your natural teeth. If you are considering whitening, it is often recommended beforehand, since bonding material does not lighten with bleaching. The dentist will discuss timing so the bonding matches your final tooth colour. Bring up any concerns about colour or shape during planning, before material is placed.

Checking tooth health

The dentist checks for decay, gum inflammation and bite issues before bonding. Healthy gums help the bonding look natural at the edges. If grinding or clenching is suspected, the dentist may suggest a night guard to protect the bonded areas. These steps help the result look good and last as long as reasonably possible after placement.

The procedure

Bonding is shaped directly on the tooth.

  1. Preparing the surface

The tooth surface is lightly roughened and treated with a conditioning solution so the resin can adhere. Anaesthetic is often unnecessary unless the bonding is repairing a cavity or near a sensitive area. The dentist keeps the tooth dry and isolated during placement to help the bond form properly. You can rest your jaw between steps if you need to.

  2. Sculpting and curing the resin

Resin is applied in layers, shaped to the desired contour and hardened with a curing light. After the final layer, the dentist trims and polishes the bonding to blend with surrounding teeth. Your bite is checked so the bonding does not interfere with chewing. You can look in a mirror and discuss any final refinements.

Maintenance

Bonding needs a little extra care to stay looking good.

  • Avoiding chips and stains

Avoid biting nails, chewing pens or opening packages with your teeth, as bonded edges can chip. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco can stain composite over time. Rinsing after these drinks and brushing regularly helps. Professional polishing at cleanings can refresh the surface and reduce minor staining. Ask which whitening or polishing products are safe to use on bonded teeth.

  • Repairs over time

Bonding may need touch-ups or replacement after several years, depending on location and habits. Chips can often be repaired without redoing the entire restoration. If you notice rough edges, discolouration or a change in how the tooth feels, mention it at your next checkup or call the office for an earlier visit if it bothers you.

Planning your appointment

Ask about bonding before you make the trip.

Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment. Describe the chip, gap or shape concern so the team can schedule the appropriate time for evaluation or treatment on the same trip.

If you plan to whiten your teeth, mention it so the dentist can advise on the best order for treatment.

Dental bonding questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does dental bonding last?

Bonding can last several years with good care, though it may chip or stain over time. Location, bite and habits all influence its lifespan. The dentist can estimate what to expect for your tooth and bite.

Does bonding damage the natural tooth?

Bonding usually involves little or no removal of enamel. The surface is lightly roughened so the resin adheres. This makes it a conservative option compared with treatments that require more tooth preparation, such as crowns.

Can bonding be whitened?

No. Composite resin does not respond to whitening. If you want whiter teeth, whitening is generally done before bonding so the material can be matched to your new shade. Allow a short gap between the two.

Is bonding painful?

Most cosmetic bonding is comfortable and does not require anaesthetic. If bonding is repairing a cavity or near sensitive areas, numbing may be used. Talk with the dentist about any concerns before the appointment begins.

Bonding or veneers, which is better?

It depends on your goals, budget and tooth condition. Bonding is more conservative and often quicker, while veneers may offer greater durability and stain resistance. The dentist can explain the trade-offs for your particular teeth.
