Dental bonding uses a putty-like composite resin that is sculpted directly onto the tooth and hardened with a curing light. It can repair a chipped corner, close a narrow gap, cover a stubborn stain or rebuild a worn edge. Because little or no enamel usually needs removing, bonding is often one of the more conservative ways to improve a tooth’s appearance.
If you are in Walsingham and have a small cosmetic or structural concern, the dentist at our Port Dover office can assess whether bonding suits it. They will explain how much change is realistic, how the material compares with veneers or crowns and what kind of upkeep a bonded tooth tends to need.

What it can fix
Small chips on front teeth, minor spaces between teeth, short or uneven edges and areas of wear near the gumline are typical uses for bonding. It can also mask some discolouration, although deep stains may show through thin layers. Bonding is sometimes combined with whitening or reshaping to create a more balanced smile.
Composite is not as strong or stain-resistant as porcelain. Large repairs on back teeth, teeth under heavy biting force or extensive changes across many teeth may do better with other restorations. The dentist will explain whether bonding is likely to hold up for your particular situation and habits.
Preparing
The dentist uses a shade guide to match the composite to your natural teeth, often in natural daylight conditions. Teeth can look different when dry, so the shade is usually chosen at the start of the appointment. If several teeth are being bonded, the overall look and proportions are discussed before any material is applied.
Composite does not lighten with whitening products. If you are thinking about whitening, it is generally done first, with bonding matched to the new shade after the colour has settled. Ask the dentist how long to wait between whitening and bonding so the match is as accurate as possible.
The procedure
The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly roughened, then a conditioning gel and bonding agent are applied to help the resin adhere. Freezing is often unnecessary unless the bonding is repairing decay or a deep chip. The composite is placed in layers and sculpted to the desired shape by hand.
Each layer is hardened with a curing light. The dentist then trims, shapes and polishes the bonding so it reflects light like natural enamel. Your bite is checked to make sure the new surface does not hit first when you close. You can usually eat and drink normally once you leave.
Long-term care
Avoid biting nails, chewing pens, opening packages with your teeth or biting directly into very hard foods with bonded front teeth. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco can stain composite over time, so rinsing with water afterwards may help. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard to reduce chipping risk.
Bonding can be polished at checkups to remove surface stains and refresh its shine. Small chips can often be repaired by adding new composite rather than replacing the whole restoration. Eventually, bonding may need redoing. Regular visits let the dentist assess its condition and advise when touch-ups are worthwhile.
Planning your appointment
When you contact our Port Dover office, describe which tooth or teeth you would like improved and what bothers you about them. If you are also considering whitening, mention it so the order of treatment can be planned.
Photos of your smile from different angles, or of earlier versions of your teeth, can help the dentist understand the change you are hoping for.

It varies with location, size, bite and habits. Many bonded repairs last several years before they need polishing, repair or replacement. Regular checkups help monitor wear and staining.
Bonding typically requires little or no removal of tooth structure. The surface is lightly roughened so the resin can attach. If decay is present, it must be removed first, which may involve more preparation.
Bonding usually involves fewer steps and no lab work, which often affects cost. Fees vary by case, so ask the office for an estimate for your specific treatment after the assessment.
It can make a slightly rotated or uneven tooth look straighter by adding material in certain spots. Noticeably crooked teeth may be better treated with aligners or braces.
Composite can pick up stains from coffee, tea, wine and smoking over time. Good home care and professional polishing can help, but bonding may gradually darken compared with natural teeth.
Small uneven edges or a slightly pointed tooth can sometimes be smoothed. Walsingham patients can learn when reshaping suits and when bonding or veneers fit better.
Veneers can change the shape, colour and length of front teeth. Walsingham patients can learn who is suited, how much tooth is prepared and the upkeep veneers need.
