Dental bonding uses tooth-coloured composite resin, sculpted directly onto the tooth and hardened with a light. It is often used for chipped edges, small gaps, worn areas, uneven shapes or marks that whitening cannot lift. Because little or no enamel usually needs removing, bonding is one of the more conservative ways to improve a tooth.
Walsh patients can have bonding assessed and placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check the tooth and bite, discuss what bonding can realistically achieve, and compare it with alternatives so you understand how long it may last and how it should be cared for.

Uses for bonding
Common uses include rebuilding a chipped front tooth, closing a narrow gap, lengthening a short tooth, covering a small stain or protecting a root surface exposed by gum recession. It can also be used to improve the shape of a single tooth so it better matches its neighbours, which is often all a smile needs to look more even in photographs.
Large restorations in heavy biting areas, significant discolouration across many teeth or teeth with extensive damage may be better served by crowns, veneers or other options. Strong grinding habits can also shorten bonding’s life considerably. The dentist will explain where bonding’s limits are for your particular teeth, so you are not surprised by chips later on.
Planning
The dentist selects a composite shade that matches your teeth, sometimes layering more than one shade to mimic the natural translucency of enamel. You may discuss the shape and length you would like. Photographs or a quick mock-up can help you visualize the change before it is placed permanently, and give you a chance to ask for adjustments.
Composite does not lighten with whitening, so timing matters. If you are considering whitening, it is usually done first so bonding can be matched to the new shade rather than the old one. Any decay or gum inflammation is treated before cosmetic work so the bonding attaches to a healthy surface and has the best chance of lasting.
The appointment
The tooth is cleaned and the surface lightly roughened so the composite can adhere securely. Anaesthetic is often unnecessary unless the bonding is repairing a deeper area close to the nerve. A conditioning liquid is applied, followed by the resin, which the dentist shapes carefully by hand to build up the missing or uneven part of the tooth.
Each layer is hardened with a curing light before the next is added. The dentist then refines the shape, checks your bite and polishes the surface to a natural sheen. Look at the result in a mirror and mention anything that feels rough or looks uneven, so it can be adjusted while you are still in the chair.
Looking after it
Composite can chip if you bite on hard objects, nails or pens, and it may pick up stains from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco over time. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth and rinse with water after staining drinks. A night guard may be recommended if you grind, since grinding is one of the quickest ways to wear bonding down.
At checkups, the dentist can polish bonded areas to restore their shine and repair small chips before they grow. Over the years, bonding may need touch-ups or replacement. Ask about combining these with regular appointments, so maintenance fits into your existing visits from Walsh rather than requiring separate trips. A quick polish often restores much of the original lustre.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office to book an assessment. Mention which tooth bothers you and whether the concern is a chip, gap, stain or shape, so the visit can be planned well and enough time set aside.
If you are thinking about whitening too, mention it when you book, as it may affect the order of treatment.

Bonding can last several years with good care, though it is generally less durable than porcelain. Habits, bite forces and the tooth’s location all affect lifespan. Regular checks help catch chips or wear early so they can be repaired.
Most bonding is comfortable and often needs no anaesthetic, because little or no tooth structure is removed. If bonding repairs a deeper area, the dentist may numb the tooth first. Tell the team if you feel any discomfort.
Composite can absorb stains over time, particularly from coffee, tea, red wine and smoking. Rinsing after these drinks and regular professional polishing can help keep bonded areas looking fresh and close to the colour of your teeth.
Because little or no enamel is typically removed, bonding is often considered relatively reversible compared with veneers. If any preparation is needed for your tooth, the dentist will explain it. Ask about this before treatment begins.
Bonding usually involves fewer steps and is often less costly than porcelain veneers, though it may need more maintenance over the years. The office can provide an estimate after examining your teeth and discussing your goals.
