Conservative repair

Bonding can change a tooth’s shape without much drilling.

Dental bonding applies tooth-coloured composite resin directly to the tooth, then sculpts and hardens it. It is commonly used to repair chips, close small gaps, cover minor stains, lengthen worn edges or protect exposed root surfaces. Because little or no enamel is removed, it is one of the more conservative ways to improve a tooth.

Patients from Vanessa can have bonding assessed and placed at our Port Dover office, often in a single appointment for each area. The dentist will explain whether bonding is a good fit for the tooth in question, or whether a veneer or crown would be more durable for the bite forces involved.

When bonding helps

Bonding handles a range of small concerns.

Cosmetic touch-ups

Chipped front teeth, small spaces between teeth, slightly uneven lengths and isolated discoloured spots are common reasons for bonding. It can also change the outline of a narrow or pointed tooth so it sits more evenly with its neighbours. Results depend on careful shade matching and sculpting, which the dentist does by hand, layer by layer, in the chair.

Protective repairs

Bonding can cover sensitive root surfaces exposed by gum recession, or rebuild edges worn down over the years. It is sometimes used as an interim solution while longer-term plans, such as orthodontics or veneers, are being considered. The dentist will explain how bonding compares with those other options for strength, appearance, cost and expected lifespan.

Planning

A little planning improves the match.

Checking health and bite

The dentist examines the tooth and nearby teeth for decay, gum health and bite pressure. Bonding on edges that take heavy biting forces may chip more easily, so your bite and any grinding habit are considered carefully. Decay or gum problems are treated first, because bonding placed over an unhealthy foundation is unlikely to last.

Whitening first, if planned

Composite resin does not respond to whitening products. If you plan to whiten your teeth, it is usually best to do that first and wait for the shade to settle, so the composite can be matched to your new colour. Discuss your overall timeline with the dentist, so the steps happen in a sensible order and nothing needs redoing.

The procedure

Bonding is built up and shaped in the chair.

  1. Preparing the surface

A shade is chosen in good light and the tooth surface is lightly roughened and conditioned so the resin can grip firmly. Freezing is often unnecessary, unless the bonding covers a sensitive area or is combined with a filling. The tooth is kept dry throughout, because even a little moisture can weaken the bond between resin and enamel.

  2. Sculpting and polishing

The dentist applies composite in thin layers, shapes each one and hardens it with a curing light. Once the form is complete, the bonding is refined and polished so it looks natural and feels smooth against your lip and tongue. Your bite is checked with marking paper, and you can usually eat and drink normally right afterward.

Care and lifespan

Bonding lasts longer with mindful habits.

  • Avoiding chips and stains

Composite can chip if you bite your nails, chew pens or open packages with your teeth. It also picks up stains from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco more readily than porcelain does. Brushing twice a day, flossing and rinsing with water after dark drinks help keep the bonding looking fresh and closely matched to your teeth.

  • Touch-ups over time

Bonding often lasts several years before it needs polishing, repair or replacement. At checkups the dentist looks for chipping, staining or rough edges along the margins. Small repairs can usually be made without starting over from scratch. A night guard may be suggested if grinding is putting extra stress on the bonded edges while you sleep.

Planning your appointment

Booking a bonding assessment from Vanessa

Call our Port Dover office and describe the tooth you would like to improve. An examination helps the dentist confirm that bonding is suitable, choose a shade and plan how long the appointment should be.

If you are considering whitening as well, mention it at the start so the order of treatment can be planned to give the best colour match.

Dental bonding questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does dental bonding last?

Many bonded repairs last several years, depending on where they are, the forces they face and how they are cared for. They may need polishing, small repairs or replacement over time, which the dentist can usually handle in a short visit.

Does bonding damage my teeth?

Bonding is conservative and usually involves little or no removal of enamel. The surface is lightly prepared so the resin can adhere. If the bonding is ever removed or replaced, the underlying tooth is typically still in good condition.

Can bonding be whitened?

No. Composite does not change colour with whitening products the way natural enamel does. For that reason, whitening is usually done first, so the bonding can be matched to the final shade of your teeth rather than the old one.

Is bonding as strong as a veneer?

Porcelain veneers are generally more resistant to staining and chipping. Bonding is less invasive and usually less costly, which makes it a good choice for smaller changes. The dentist can explain which suits your tooth and goals better.

Does bonding hurt?

Most people feel very little discomfort during bonding, because the enamel surface is not sensitive. Freezing is often not needed unless the area is already sensitive, the bonding reaches the root surface or it is combined with a filling.
