Dental bonding uses a tooth-coloured composite resin that is sculpted directly onto the tooth and hardened with a light. It can repair small chips, close narrow gaps, cover a discoloured spot or lengthen a tooth that looks short. In many cases, little or no enamel needs to be removed, which makes bonding a relatively conservative option.
Patients from Silver Hill can have bonding assessed and placed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at the tooth, the bite and your goals, then explain whether bonding is likely to give a satisfying, durable result or whether another option would serve you better.

What bonding fixes
Chipped edges, minor gaps between front teeth, slightly uneven lengths, small areas of staining that whitening cannot change and exposed root surfaces near the gum are frequent reasons for bonding. It can also be used to repair small cavities in visible areas. Because it is shaped by hand, results can be quite natural looking.
Bonding is less suited to large changes, teeth under heavy biting forces or people who grind heavily, since the resin can chip. It may also stain more readily than porcelain. When bigger changes are needed, veneers, crowns or orthodontic treatment might be more appropriate, and the dentist will explain these alternatives.
Planning the shade
The dentist selects a resin shade that blends with your surrounding teeth, sometimes layering more than one shade to mimic the natural translucency of enamel. Teeth are best matched in natural light and before they become dried out during treatment. You can look at the shade options and give your opinion before the material is placed.
Composite resin does not lighten with whitening products. If you would like your teeth brighter overall, whitening is usually done first, with a waiting period before bonding so the colour can stabilize. The dentist can explain the recommended timing and how to plan both steps together.
The appointment
The tooth is cleaned and the surface gently roughened, then a conditioning liquid and bonding agent are applied to help the resin adhere. Freezing is often unnecessary unless the bonding is repairing decay or is close to a sensitive area. The dentist will explain what to expect before starting.
The resin is applied, shaped to the desired contour and hardened with a curing light. Additional layers may be added and shaped. Finally, the bonding is trimmed and polished so it reflects light like enamel. Your bite is checked to make sure nothing feels high or catches when you close.
Making it last
Avoid biting fingernails, pens, ice or hard foods directly with bonded teeth. Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking can stain resin over time, so rinsing after these and maintaining good hygiene helps. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may be recommended to protect the bonding from chipping.
Bonding can wear, chip or discolour gradually and may need polishing, repair or replacement at some point. Regular checkups let the dentist examine the edges and surface. Small chips can often be repaired without redoing the entire restoration, so report any damage you notice rather than waiting.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange an assessment and mention the tooth or area you would like improved. If you are also considering whitening, say so, since it can affect the order of treatment.
Bring photos showing how your smile looked before a chip or change, if that is the look you hope to restore.

Bonding often lasts several years, though it depends on its location, your bite and habits like grinding or nail biting. It may need touch-ups or replacement over time, and the dentist checks it at routine visits.
Bonding usually involves minimal or no removal of enamel. The surface is roughened slightly to help the resin stick. Because so little tooth is altered, bonding is generally considered a conservative choice.
Composite resin can pick up stains from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco over time. Good oral hygiene and regular professional polishing help, and badly stained bonding can be resurfaced or replaced.
Small gaps can often be closed by adding resin to the sides of the teeth. Larger gaps may make teeth look too wide when bonded, so the dentist may suggest orthodontic treatment either alone or before bonding.
Both can improve appearance, but bonding is sculpted directly onto the tooth in the office, while veneers are thin shells typically made separately and bonded on. Veneers usually resist staining better but involve more preparation.
Smoothing a pointed canine or evening a chipped edge is done by contouring enamel. Silver Hill patients can learn who suits reshaping and where its limits are.
Veneers cover the front of teeth to change their shape, colour or size. Silver Hill patients can weigh the permanence, upkeep and alternatives before choosing.
