Dental bonding uses a tooth-coloured composite resin that is sculpted directly onto a tooth and hardened with a light. It can repair chips, fill small gaps, cover discoloured patches or protect an exposed root surface. Because little or no enamel is usually removed, it is often considered a conservative option, though it has limits in strength and stain resistance.
Patients from Peacock Point, whether there year-round or for the summer months, can discuss bonding at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at the tooth involved, your bite and your goals before recommending whether bonding or another option is the better fit.

Uses
Small chips on front teeth, minor gaps, uneven edges and isolated stains that do not respond to whitening are common cosmetic reasons for bonding. It can also change the shape of a tooth slightly, such as lengthening a short tooth. The result is often achieved in one appointment, which appeals to many people with a specific concern.
Bonding can cover sensitive root surfaces exposed by gum recession or repair worn areas near the gumline. It may also be used for small cavities. In these cases, the purpose is protection as well as appearance. The dentist will explain whether bonding provides adequate durability for the area being treated.
Suitability
Bonding works well for small to moderate repairs on teeth with healthy structure and in areas that do not bear heavy biting forces. It is reversible to some degree, since little enamel is removed. If you want to test a change before committing to something more permanent, bonding can be a useful first step.
Large repairs, teeth subject to heavy grinding or areas needing strong stain resistance may be better served by veneers or crowns. Bonding can chip and may discolour over time, especially with coffee, tea or smoking. The dentist will compare options honestly so you can choose with realistic expectations about how long each lasts.
The appointment
The dentist selects a resin shade to match your surrounding teeth, ideally before your teeth dry out during treatment, since dry enamel looks lighter. The surface is lightly roughened and a conditioning liquid applied to help the resin adhere. Anaesthetic is often unnecessary unless the bonding is repairing a cavity or sensitive area.
Resin is applied in layers, shaped by hand and hardened with a curing light. The dentist then trims and polishes it to resemble natural enamel. Your bite is checked and adjusted if needed. The whole process for a single tooth may take under an hour, though more complex or multiple repairs take longer.
Care
Avoid biting fingernails, chewing pens or using your teeth to open packages. Limit staining drinks in the first couple of days, and rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine. Brush with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth daily. If you grind your teeth, ask whether a night guard would help.
Bonding may need polishing, touch-ups or replacement over time. Small chips can often be repaired without redoing the whole area. Bring any concerns to your regular checkups. If you notice a rough edge, staining or a piece breaking away, contact the office so it can be assessed before the damage spreads.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to book an assessment. Describe the chip, gap or stain you would like addressed so the team can arrange the right appointment for an examination and discussion.
If you have whitening plans, mention them, since bonding is usually matched to your teeth after any whitening is complete.

Bonding can last several years depending on its location, your bite and habits. It may chip or stain over time. Regular checkups allow the dentist to polish, repair or replace it as needed.
Usually very little enamel is removed, making bonding a conservative option. The surface is lightly roughened so the resin can adhere. The dentist will explain how much preparation is needed for your specific repair.
No. Whitening products do not change the colour of composite resin. If you plan to whiten, it is usually best to do so before bonding so the resin can be matched to your brighter shade.
Most cosmetic bonding requires no anaesthetic, since it involves the enamel surface. If bonding is repairing a cavity or covering a sensitive area, numbing may be used to keep you comfortable.
It depends on your goals, the extent of the change and how long you want the result to last. Bonding is often quicker and more conservative, while veneers may resist stains and wear better. The dentist can compare both.
Uneven edges or a slightly pointed tooth may be refined by reshaping. Peacock Point patients can find out whether this conservative option suits them in Port Dover.
Veneers can change the colour, shape and length of front teeth. Peacock Point patients can review the preparation, materials and upkeep involved at our Port Dover office.
