Dental bonding uses composite resin applied directly to the tooth, sculpted by hand and hardened with a curing light. It can repair small chips, close narrow gaps, cover stains that whitening will not lift or protect an exposed root surface. Because little or no enamel usually needs to be removed, it is often considered a conservative way to improve a tooth.
If a chipped edge or small gap has been on your mind, our Port Dover office can assess whether bonding is suitable. Long Point patients can often complete simple bonding in a single appointment after an exam.

Uses for bonding
Common cosmetic uses include rebuilding a chipped front tooth, closing a small space between teeth, evening out uneven lengths and covering spots or bands of discolouration. Results can look natural when shade and shape are carefully selected. The dentist can show you on a mirror or photo which edges might be changed.
Bonding may also cover sensitive exposed roots near the gumline or repair worn areas caused by brushing too hard. It is less suitable for large restorations on heavy-biting back teeth, where crowns or onlays may hold up better. The dentist will explain where bonding works well for your mouth.
Is it for you?
Bonding is typically completed in one visit, requires little or no tooth reduction and can be repaired or added to later. It is often less involved than veneers or crowns. For people who want a modest improvement without committing to more extensive work, it can be a practical first step.
Composite can stain over time and may chip under heavy biting or habits like nail biting. It generally needs touch-ups or replacement more often than porcelain. If you plan to whiten your teeth, do that first, since bonding does not lighten and is matched to the current shade.
The appointment
The dentist selects a shade, then lightly roughens the tooth surface and applies a conditioning liquid so the resin can attach. Freezing is often unnecessary unless the bonding covers decay or a sensitive area. Keeping the tooth dry is important, so cotton rolls or other isolation may be used.
Resin is applied in layers, shaped by hand and hardened with a light. The dentist trims and polishes it to blend with neighbouring teeth and checks your bite. You can see the result before you leave and should mention anything that feels rough or looks different from what you expected.
Care and upkeep
Brush and clean between teeth as usual. Limit strongly staining drinks like coffee, tea and red wine, or rinse with water afterward. Avoid biting fingernails, ice, pens or other hard objects with bonded teeth, as resin is not as strong as natural enamel under sharp impact.
At checkups, the dentist will look at the edges and surface of the bonding. Polishing can refresh dullness, and small chips can usually be repaired. If a piece breaks off, keep it and contact the office. A night guard may be suggested if grinding threatens the bonded edges.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office and describe the chip, gap or mark you would like to address. The team can book an exam and explain whether bonding might be completed in one visit.
If you are thinking about whitening too, mention it when booking so the order of treatment can be planned sensibly.

It varies with location, bite and habits. Bonding often lasts several years but may need polishing, repair or replacement over time. Regular checkups help the dentist monitor its condition.
Bonding usually requires little or no removal of enamel. The surface is lightly prepared to help the resin attach. This makes it one of the more conservative cosmetic options available.
No. Resin does not respond to whitening. If you want lighter teeth, whiten first, then match bonding to the new shade. Existing bonding may need replacing after whitening to match.
Composite can restore many back-tooth cavities, but large repairs on heavy-biting surfaces may be better served by other restorations. The dentist will recommend what suits each tooth.
Small chips can often be repaired by adding new resin. Contact the office, avoid chewing hard foods on that tooth and bring any broken piece. The dentist will check whether a repair or replacement is best.
Uneven edges or a slightly long tooth can sometimes be smoothed with careful contouring. Long Point patients can ask about reshaping at our Port Dover office.
Veneers cover the front of teeth to change shape, colour or alignment. Long Point patients can weigh porcelain and composite options with our Port Dover dentist.
