Dental bonding uses a tooth-coloured composite resin that is applied directly to the tooth, shaped by hand and hardened with a curing light. It can rebuild a chipped edge, close a small gap, cover a discoloured patch or lengthen a worn tooth. Because little or no enamel needs to be removed, it is one of the more conservative cosmetic options available.
Patients travelling in from Langton can discuss bonding at our Port Dover office during a consultation or a regular checkup. The dentist will look at the size of the change you want, the forces your bite places on the tooth and whether bonding is likely to give a durable, natural-looking result.

What bonding fixes
Bonding is often used to repair small to moderate chips on front teeth, close narrow spaces between teeth, even out teeth of slightly different lengths and restore edges worn by grinding. It can also change the shape of a small or pointed tooth. The dentist sculpts the material freehand, so the result can be tailored closely to your smile.
Discoloured spots that do not respond to whitening can sometimes be covered with a thin layer of composite. Bonding can also protect a root surface exposed by gum recession, which may reduce sensitivity. The dentist will explain whether a cosmetic or protective purpose is the main goal and how that affects the material choice and technique.
Limits and trade-offs
Composite resin is not as strong or stain-resistant as porcelain. It can chip if you bite hard objects, and it may darken over time with coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco. Many bonded repairs last for years and can be touched up or replaced in a single visit. Ask the dentist what kind of lifespan is realistic for your situation.
Large changes, heavy grinding, significant crowding or teeth with extensive old fillings may be better served by veneers, crowns or orthodontic treatment. If the dentist feels bonding would need frequent repair in your case, they will explain the alternatives. A clear understanding of the trade-offs helps you decide on the approach that suits you and your budget.
The appointment
The dentist selects a composite shade that matches your teeth, ideally before the teeth become dry and temporarily lighter. If you plan to whiten, it is best done beforehand, since composite will not change colour later. The tooth surface is lightly roughened and conditioned so the resin can bond securely, usually without the need for freezing.
Composite is applied in layers, shaped with fine instruments and hardened with a curing light. The dentist then trims and polishes it to blend with the surrounding enamel and checks your bite. Bring up anything that looks or feels off before you leave. Small refinements are easy to make while you are still in the chair.
Caring for bonding
Avoid biting fingernails, chewing ice or pens and opening packages with your teeth. If you play contact sports, wear a mouthguard. Rinse with water after coffee, tea or other staining drinks. Brush with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and floss daily, since plaque buildup at the edges can cause staining and gum inflammation around the bonded tooth.
At routine visits, the dentist and hygienist examine bonded areas for chips, rough spots and discolouration. Polishing can often restore the shine. If a section breaks or stains significantly, it can usually be repaired or replaced without major work. Mention any change in how the bonding looks or feels between visits so it can be addressed early.
Planning your appointment
Book a consultation at our Port Dover office and point out the teeth you would like to improve. The dentist can explain whether bonding suits them and what the result is likely to look like.
If you are considering whitening too, mention it at the start so the two treatments can be planned in the right order.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It varies with the location, size and your habits. Many bonded repairs last several years before needing a touch-up. Grinding, biting hard objects and staining drinks can shorten lifespan. Regular checkups help catch wear early and keep the repair looking good.
Most bonding does not require anaesthetic because the dentist is adding material to the surface rather than removing tooth. If bonding is used to repair a deeper chip or fill a cavity, freezing may be used to keep the tooth comfortable.
No. Composite resin does not respond to whitening products. If you want whiter teeth, whiten first and then have the bonding matched to the new shade. Existing bonding can be replaced later to match if your tooth colour changes.
Neither is universally better. Bonding is more conservative and typically done in one visit, while porcelain veneers resist staining and chipping better. The right choice depends on the change you want, your bite and how much maintenance you are comfortable with.
Small gaps can often be closed by adding composite to the sides of the teeth. Larger gaps may make teeth look too wide if closed with bonding alone, in which case aligners or other approaches might be suggested to give a more balanced result.
Small uneven edges or a slightly long tooth can sometimes be smoothed in one visit. Langton patients can ask whether enamel contouring suits them in Port Dover.
Veneers cover the front of teeth to change colour, shape or length. Langton patients can learn who is a good candidate and how veneers are maintained.
