Caring for La Salette patients at our Port Dover office

Dental bonding uses a tooth-coloured composite resin applied directly to the enamel, sculpted by hand and hardened with a curing light. It is often chosen for small chips, minor gaps, slightly short teeth or areas of exposed root. Because little or no tooth structure is removed, it is considered a conservative option.
From La Salette, bonding appointments take place at our Port Dover office. The dentist can examine the teeth involved, discuss whether bonding suits your bite and expectations, and explain how long it may last compared with alternatives such as veneers or crowns.

Uses for bonding
A chipped front tooth, a worn edge or a small area of decay can often be restored with bonding. It can also cover sensitive areas where gums have receded and exposed part of the root. The dentist will check that the tooth underneath is healthy and that no deeper crack or decay needs attention first.
Bonding can lengthen a short tooth, close a narrow gap or improve the shape of a tooth that looks slightly different from its neighbours. It works best for modest changes. Larger alterations, or teeth that are heavily stained, may be better suited to other treatments the dentist can describe.
Limits to know
Composite resin is not as hard or stain-resistant as porcelain. Over time, bonding may chip, wear or pick up colour from coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco. Many bonded repairs last for years with good care, but touch-ups or replacement are a normal part of their long-term maintenance.
If you grind your teeth or bite heavily on the bonded area, the resin may be more prone to chipping. The dentist will look at how your teeth meet and may suggest a night guard or a different restoration for teeth under heavy force. Discuss these factors before deciding.
The procedure
The dentist selects a resin shade that matches your natural teeth, ideally before your teeth dry out during the visit. If you plan to whiten, it is usually better to do so first, since bonding will not change colour with bleaching. The tooth surface is then gently roughened and a bonding agent applied.
Resin is placed and shaped in layers, each hardened with a curing light. Once the shape is right, the dentist checks your bite and polishes the surface to a natural sheen. Anaesthetic is often unnecessary unless decay is being removed or the area is near the gum.
Caring for bonding
Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth. Avoid biting fingernails, pens, ice or opening packages with your teeth. Rinsing after coffee, tea or red wine can reduce staining. If you smoke, be aware that bonding may discolour more quickly.
During regular checkups, the dentist inspects bonded areas for chips, rough spots or staining. Professional polishing can sometimes refresh the surface. If a section chips, it can often be repaired. Call the office if bonding breaks or feels sharp, rather than waiting for your next visit.
Planning your appointment
Book an appointment at our Port Dover office and explain which teeth you would like repaired or refined. If whitening is on your list, mention it so timing can be planned.
Ask roughly how long the visit may take, particularly if several teeth are being bonded at once.

Bonding often lasts several years, depending on location, bite and habits. It may eventually need repair or replacement. Regular checkups help catch chips or wear early so they can be addressed.
Usually not. Anaesthetic is often not needed because little or no tooth is removed. If decay is involved or the area is sensitive, the dentist may numb the tooth for comfort.
No, composite does not respond to whitening the way enamel does. If you want whiter teeth, whitening is usually done before bonding so the resin can be matched to your new shade.
Each has advantages. Bonding is typically more conservative and quicker, while veneers may resist staining and wear better. The dentist can compare them based on your goals and bite.
Small gaps can often be closed with bonding. Larger gaps may look better with orthodontic treatment or other restorations. The dentist will assess the space and discuss what result is realistic.
Small refinements to uneven or pointed edges can make a difference. See how La Salette patients are assessed in Port Dover and why reshaping stays modest.
Thinking about veneers? La Salette patients can learn how the dentist judges suitability, what enamel preparation means and how veneers hold up over time.
