Repair with resin

Bonding adds material to a tooth rather than taking much away.

Dental bonding uses a tooth-coloured composite resin that is applied, sculpted and hardened directly on the tooth. It can repair chips, cover small areas of discolouration, close narrow gaps or change the shape of a tooth. Because it usually requires little or no removal of natural enamel, it is often considered a conservative option.

People living in Boston and the surrounding area can ask about bonding at our Port Dover office. Show the dentist the teeth you want to improve and explain what you would like to see, and they can tell you honestly whether bonding is likely to give the result you want.

Where bonding helps

Bonding is versatile but has its limits.

Repairs and cosmetic touch-ups

Small chips on front teeth, uneven edges, narrow spaces between teeth, minor stains that whitening cannot lift and exposed root surfaces near the gum can often be treated with bonding. It is also used to make a small or oddly shaped tooth look more in proportion with its neighbours. Many of these changes can be made in a single visit without drilling.

Situations where it may not be ideal

Bonding is less durable than porcelain under heavy biting forces and can pick up stains over time. Large repairs on back teeth, teeth with extensive damage or people with strong grinding habits may be better suited to crowns, onlays or veneers. The dentist will explain where bonding fits your situation well and where it may fall short over the years.

Planning the look

Matching colour and shape is part of the planning.

Choosing the shade

The dentist selects a resin shade to blend with your natural teeth, sometimes combining shades to mimic the slightly translucent edge of real enamel. Talk about how natural or how bright you want the result to look. Good lighting and a hand mirror during planning help you see how the chosen shade compares with the teeth on either side.

Whitening first or not

Bonding does not change colour with whitening products. If you plan to whiten your teeth, it is usually best to do that first and let the shade settle, so the bonding can be matched to the lighter colour afterward. Discuss your plans before treatment begins so the order of steps makes sense for your goals and avoids redoing work.

The appointment

Most bonding is completed in a single visit.

  1. Preparing the surface

The tooth surface is cleaned and lightly roughened, then a conditioning liquid is applied to help the resin grip the enamel. Numbing is often not needed unless the repair is close to the nerve or involves removing decay. The tooth is kept dry throughout the process, which is important for a strong and long-lasting bond.

  2. Sculpting and polishing

Resin is applied in layers, shaped by hand and hardened with a curing light. The dentist then refines the shape, checks your bite and polishes the surface to a natural sheen. You can check the result in a mirror and ask for small adjustments before leaving, since changes are easiest to make while you are still in the chair.

Looking after it

Bonded teeth need sensible care to keep looking good.

  • Daily habits

Brush and floss as usual. Limit coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco, especially in the first couple of days, since fresh resin can pick up stains more easily. Avoid biting fingernails, pens or ice, all of which can chip the edges. If you grind your teeth at night, ask whether a night guard would help protect the bonding.

  • Repairs and touch-ups

Bonding may chip or lose some of its shine over time. Small repairs or a professional polish can often restore it without starting over. Bring any concerns to your regular checkups so the dentist can look at the edges and surface. Eventually, bonding may need to be replaced, which can usually be done fairly simply in one visit.

Planning your appointment

Asking about bonding from Boston

Call our Port Dover office to book a bonding consultation. Mention the teeth you want to improve and whether you are also thinking about whitening, so the dentist can plan the order of treatment.

If your bonding is for a recent chip, mention any pain or sensitivity, which may need checking before cosmetic work begins.

Dental bonding questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does dental bonding last?

It varies with location, bite forces and habits. Bonding can last several years with good care, but it may chip or stain and need touch-ups or replacement eventually. Regular checkups help the dentist spot wear before it becomes noticeable.

Does bonding damage my teeth?

Bonding usually requires little or no removal of enamel. The surface is lightly prepared so the resin can adhere securely. It is considered one of the more conservative cosmetic and repair options available for front teeth.

Can bonding be whitened?

No. Bonding resin does not respond to whitening products. If you want whiter teeth, whitening is usually done first, then the bonding is matched to the new shade so everything blends together evenly when you smile.

Will bonding look natural?

The dentist chooses and layers shades to blend with your teeth, and shapes the resin to match their form. Results depend on the tooth and the repair, and you can ask for small adjustments before you leave the appointment.

Is bonding the same as a veneer?

Not quite. Bonding is applied directly and shaped by hand in one visit, while veneers are usually made separately and then attached. They differ in durability, the preparation involved and how they respond to staining over time.
