Go at a pace that works

Feeling nervous about the dentist is common, and it can be planned for.

Dental anxiety ranges from mild unease to fear strong enough to keep someone away for years. It may come from a painful past experience, a strong gag reflex, feeling out of control or embarrassment about the state of one’s teeth. Whatever the reason, it is a legitimate concern that deserves to be taken seriously.

If you live around Vanessa and have been putting off care, you can start by phoning our Port Dover office and simply explaining how you feel. Many people find that naming their worries ahead of time, and knowing they can stop at any point, makes a first step far more manageable.

Naming the worry

Specific worries can be addressed specifically.

What triggers your anxiety

Think about what bothers you most: needles, the sound of the drill, smells, lying back, gagging, the fear of pain or of hearing bad news. Write it down if that is easier than saying it out loud. When the team knows what to avoid or explain, they can adapt how they work, rather than following a routine that happens to hit every trigger.

Letting go of embarrassment

Many anxious patients worry about being judged for not visiting in a long time. Dental teams see this often, and their focus is on helping from where you are today, not on how you got here. Being honest about how long it has been and what you are worried about helps them plan a sensible, unhurried first visit.

Planning the visit

A first visit does not have to involve treatment.

  • Start small

Some people start with a simple conversation, or a brief look in the mouth without any instruments at all. Others prefer a short examination before any cleaning or treatment is even discussed. Ask for an appointment time when the office tends to be quieter, and leave extra time for the drive so you are not arriving rushed and already on edge.

  • Agree on signals and breaks

Agree on a stop signal, such as raising your left hand, before anything begins. Ask the dentist to explain each step and to warn you about sounds or sensations before they happen. Bringing headphones and music, a support person or something to hold can help. You remain in control of when to pause, and that agreement should be respected.

Comfort options

Several tools can make treatment easier.

Numbing and gentle technique

Topical gel before an injection, slow delivery of anaesthetic and checking that the area is fully numb before starting all help reduce discomfort. If numbing did not work well for you in the past, mention it so the dentist can plan for it. Breaking treatment into shorter visits may also be possible, so each appointment feels less daunting.

Nitrous oxide and sedation

For some people, nitrous oxide or other forms of sedation are appropriate. These are assessed individually, based on your health, medications and the procedure planned. Ask the dentist what is available, what preparation is required beforehand and whether you will need someone to drive you home to Vanessa afterward. Those answers help you decide calmly and in advance, rather than on the day.

Building confidence

Confidence tends to grow with each positive visit.

  1. Celebrate each step

After each appointment, notice what went better than you expected and tell the team what helped. That feedback shapes how the next visit is planned. Even a short or partial appointment counts as real progress, especially if you have avoided care for a long time. Small, steady steps often work better than trying to do everything at once.

  2. Keep regular visits going

Regular checkups mean problems are caught while they are small and easier to treat, which reduces the chance of a painful emergency that feeds the anxiety. Booking the next visit before you leave can make it easier to follow through. Over time, many anxious patients find that dental visits gradually become routine and far less stressful.

Planning your appointment

Taking the first step from Vanessa

Call our Port Dover office and let the team know you feel anxious about dental visits. Ask for a first appointment focused on talking and getting familiar, and mention what worries you most.

You are welcome to bring a support person, and to ask for written information if that helps you think things over at home.

Dental anxiety questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Can I just come in to talk first?

In many cases, yes. A consultation without any treatment lets you meet the team, see the room and discuss your concerns at your own pace. Ask about this option when you call to book, and explain that you would prefer to start slowly.

What if I gag easily?

Let the team know before they begin. They can adjust your position, use smaller instruments, take frequent breaks and suggest breathing techniques that help some people. Sedation may also be considered in certain situations where gagging makes care very difficult.

Will I be judged for not going in years?

The team’s goal is to help, not to criticize. Many patients return to dental care after long gaps for all kinds of reasons. Being open about how long it has been simply helps them understand your situation and plan your care sensibly.

Is sedation right for me?

It depends on your health, the procedure planned and how strong your anxiety is. The dentist will review your medical history and medications and explain whether sedation is appropriate, what it involves and what preparation would be needed.

Can treatment be done in short visits?

Often it can. Splitting treatment into a series of shorter appointments may feel much more manageable than one long one. The dentist will explain whether this approach is clinically appropriate for the particular work you need.
