Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaInfection needs attention
A dental abscess is a collection of pus caused by bacterial infection, usually at the root tip of a tooth or within the gum. It may cause throbbing pain, a bad taste, swelling or a small bump on the gum that drains. Sometimes the pain eases when pressure is released, but the infection remains and can spread if the cause is not addressed.
If you are in Villa Nova and think you have an abscess, call our Port Dover office promptly to describe your symptoms. The team can discuss urgency, and the dentist will examine the tooth to find and treat the source of infection.

Warning signs
Throbbing pain that may worsen when lying down, tenderness when biting, a tooth that feels raised, a pimple-like swelling on the gum, a foul taste and swelling of the cheek or jaw are typical signs. You may also feel generally unwell or run a fever. Mention every symptom when you call, even those that seem unrelated.
Swelling that spreads quickly, extends under the jaw or toward the eye, or makes it hard to breathe, swallow or open your mouth is a medical emergency. So is high fever with feeling very ill. In these situations, call 911 or go to an emergency department immediately rather than waiting for a dental appointment.
Before your visit
Rinsing gently with warm salt water may ease discomfort. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek can help with swelling. Pain relievers may be used only as directed on the label and in line with any medical advice you have been given. Keep your head elevated when resting if lying flat increases throbbing.
Do not apply heat to a swollen face, and do not try to pop or drain a gum swelling yourself. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue. If a drained abscess suddenly stops hurting, still keep your appointment, since the infection has not been treated.
Treatment
The dentist will examine the area, test nearby teeth and usually take an X-ray to locate the infection and assess how much bone is involved. It is not always obvious which tooth is responsible, so these tests matter. The dentist will explain what is causing the abscess and what is required to resolve it.
Depending on the findings, treatment may include draining the abscess, root canal treatment to clean the inside of the tooth, gum treatment if the infection is periodontal, or extraction if the tooth cannot be saved. Antibiotics may be prescribed in some situations, but they generally support treatment rather than replace it.
Recovery
Tenderness can linger for a few days after treatment. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as instructed. Contact the office if swelling returns, pain worsens or you develop a fever. A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to check healing and confirm the infection is resolving.
If you had root canal treatment, the tooth will usually need a permanent restoration, often a crown, to protect it. If the tooth was removed, the dentist can discuss replacement options once healing is complete. Keeping these follow-up steps helps prevent reinfection and protect your overall dental health.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as soon as you notice signs of an abscess. Describe the pain, swelling and any fever so the team can advise on urgency and arrange an appointment.
If swelling is spreading or you have trouble breathing or swallowing, call 911 or go to emergency instead of travelling to the dental office.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Antibiotics may help control spreading infection, but the source usually needs dental treatment such as drainage, root canal therapy or extraction. Otherwise the infection is likely to return.
Yes. Pain can ease when an abscess drains or the nerve dies, but the infection is still present. Keep your appointment so the dentist can treat the cause.
Not always, but a draining bump near a tooth often indicates infection. Have it examined so the dentist can determine the cause.
That depends on how you feel. If you are unwell, have a fever or swelling is increasing, seek prompt care. Call the office for advice.
Many teeth can be saved with root canal treatment. If the tooth is too damaged, extraction may be recommended. The dentist will explain after examining it.
Root canal treatment can save a tooth with an inflamed or infected nerve. Villa Nova patients can learn about diagnosis, visits and protecting the tooth after.
Swelling in the cheek or jaw can mean a dental infection. Villa Nova patients can learn which signs need 911 and which need a prompt call to our office.
