Infection needs attention

An abscess will not clear up by itself.

A dental abscess is a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth or in the gum beside it. It often follows deep decay, a cracked tooth or advanced gum disease. Symptoms can include throbbing pain, a swollen gum, a pimple-like bump that drains, a bad taste or swelling in the face. Pain may ease if it drains, but the infection remains.

If you are in Vanessa or the surrounding countryside and suspect an abscess, call our Port Dover office as soon as possible. The team will ask about your symptoms and arrange an assessment, and they will tell you plainly if anything you describe needs hospital care first.

Recognizing it

Know which symptoms need a dentist soon and which need a hospital now.

  • Symptoms in the mouth

Persistent throbbing pain, tenderness when biting, sensitivity to heat, a swollen or red gum and a small bump that releases salty or foul-tasting fluid are all common signs. Sometimes the tooth feels slightly raised or loose. Even if the pain fades, a draining abscess still needs dental treatment, because the source of the infection is still there underneath.

  • Signs the infection is spreading

Fever, feeling generally unwell, swelling of the cheek, jaw or under the tongue, or swelling that keeps growing, are signs the infection may be spreading beyond the tooth. Difficulty opening the mouth, breathing or swallowing is an emergency. In any of those situations, seek emergency medical care immediately rather than waiting for a dental appointment.

Before you are seen

Simple measures can help, but they are not treatment.

  1. Easing discomfort safely

Rinse gently with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the package, if it is safe for you to do so. Keep your head raised on pillows when lying down. A cool compress on the outside of the cheek may help with swelling. Then make the call to the dental office rather than trying to wait it out.

  2. What not to do

Do not apply heat to a swollen face, place aspirin against the gum or try to pop the bump yourself. Leftover antibiotics from a past illness are not a substitute for a proper assessment and may be the wrong medication. These shortcuts can delay effective care or make the infection harder to manage once you are seen.

Treatment

Treatment targets the cause of the infection.

Draining and removing the source

The dentist examines the area and takes X-rays to locate the infection and judge its extent. Relieving pressure, sometimes by draining the abscess, can ease pain quickly. Antibiotics may be prescribed in some situations, particularly when infection is spreading or you are unwell, but they usually do not resolve the underlying problem on their own.

Root canal or extraction

To remove the source, root canal treatment may be recommended so the tooth can be kept, or the tooth may need to be removed if it cannot be saved. Gum abscesses may be treated by cleaning the affected pocket thoroughly. The dentist explains each option, what it involves and what follow-up appointments each would require.

Recovery

Follow-up completes the treatment.

Healing over the next days

Pain and swelling usually begin to improve within a few days after the source is treated. Take any prescribed medication exactly as directed and finish the full course if antibiotics were given. Call the office if swelling increases, a fever develops or pain worsens instead of easing, since those changes need to be looked at promptly.

Restoring and protecting the tooth

A tooth treated with root canal therapy often needs a crown or other restoration afterward to protect it from breaking. Keep the follow-up appointment for that work. Regular checkups and careful daily cleaning help prevent the decay or gum disease that led to the abscess in the first place from returning elsewhere in the mouth later on.

Abscess questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Can antibiotics alone cure a tooth abscess?

Usually not. Antibiotics may help control an infection that is spreading, but the source, such as an infected nerve or a deep gum pocket, needs dental treatment to resolve the problem. Without that, the infection commonly returns once the medication ends.

My pain stopped. Do I still need treatment?

Yes. Pain can fade when an abscess drains or when the nerve inside the tooth dies, but the infection can persist quietly and spread. Have the tooth assessed even if it feels better, so the cause can be dealt with properly.

Is a dental abscess an emergency?

It needs prompt dental care, ideally within a short time of noticing symptoms. If facial swelling spreads quickly, or you have any trouble breathing or swallowing, it becomes a medical emergency that requires immediate hospital attention instead.

Will I lose the tooth?

Not necessarily. Many abscessed teeth can be saved with root canal treatment followed by a crown or other restoration. If the tooth is too badly damaged or the supporting bone is lost, extraction may be recommended instead.

Can I use heat for the swelling?

Avoid applying heat to facial swelling, as warmth may encourage the infection to spread. A cool compress on the outside of the cheek, used for short periods, is a safer choice while you arrange to be seen by the dentist.
