A dental abscess is a pocket of infection that forms at the root of a tooth or in the gum beside it. It may cause throbbing pain, a bad taste, tenderness when biting, or a swollen bump on the gum. Sometimes pain eases when pus drains, but the infection usually remains and can spread if left untreated.
If you are staying or living in Turkey Point and suspect an abscess, contact our Port Dover office promptly. Describe the pain, any swelling, fever or difficulty opening your mouth so the team can advise on urgency.

Recognize an abscess
Persistent or throbbing toothache, pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold, a bad taste or a pimple-like swelling on the gum are typical. A tooth may feel slightly raised or loose. Some abscesses develop from deep decay or a cracked tooth, while others stem from gum infection. Any of these deserves a call to the dental office.
Fever, feeling unwell, swelling of the face, jaw or neck, difficulty opening the mouth, or trouble swallowing or breathing can mean the infection is spreading. These signs need urgent medical attention. Go to the emergency department or call 911 if swelling is rapid or breathing and swallowing are affected.
Assessment
The dentist examines the affected area, checks for swelling and tenderness, and may test the tooth’s response to temperature or tapping. Gum pockets may be measured if a periodontal abscess is suspected. Your medical history and any medications or allergies are reviewed, since they can affect treatment choices.
X-rays help show whether infection is at the root tip, in the bone or associated with the gum. They also reveal decay, cracks or failed restorations that may have let bacteria in. The dentist will explain what the images show and why a particular approach to treatment is being recommended.
Treatment
Depending on the findings, the dentist may drain the abscess, begin root canal treatment to clean infected tissue inside the tooth, deep-clean a gum pocket, or recommend extraction if the tooth cannot be saved. The goal is to remove the source of bacteria. Ask what each option involves and what the outlook for the tooth is.
Antibiotics may be prescribed in some situations, such as when infection has spread or you have certain health conditions. They are generally not a substitute for treating the tooth itself. Take any prescription exactly as directed and let the dentist know about allergies or other medicines you take.
Recovery
Some tenderness is expected for a few days after treatment. Follow the dentist’s advice on pain relief, rinsing and eating. Swelling should gradually go down. If pain worsens, swelling increases, or you develop a fever, contact the office or seek medical care. Do not ignore new or spreading symptoms.
If root canal treatment was started, you may need further visits and a crown to protect the tooth. After an extraction, the dentist may discuss replacement options once healing is complete. Seasonal residents should plan how follow-up appointments will be completed before leaving the area for an extended time.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Pain may ease if the abscess drains, but the infection usually remains. Without treatment it can spread to surrounding tissues. A dentist needs to address the source.
Antibiotics may help control spreading infection, but they generally do not fix the underlying cause. Treatment of the tooth or gum is usually still needed.
It should be assessed promptly. If you have facial swelling that is spreading, fever or difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care right away.
Often, through root canal treatment or gum therapy. If the tooth is badly damaged, extraction may be recommended. The dentist will explain the options after assessment.
Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you; follow the package directions. Avoid placing aspirin on the gum. Call the office if symptoms worsen.
Root canal treatment can save a tooth with an infected or inflamed nerve. Turkey Point patients can learn how it is diagnosed, performed and protected afterward.
Swelling in the cheek or jaw can signal a dental infection. Turkey Point patients can learn which signs need a hospital and how dental infections are treated.
