Infection needs timely attention

An abscess will not clear up on its own.

A dental abscess is a pocket of infection, usually at the tip of a tooth root or in the gum beside a tooth. It can cause throbbing pain, tenderness when biting, a bad taste, swelling or a small pimple on the gum. Sometimes pain eases if the abscess drains, but the infection remains and needs dental treatment.

Living in Selkirk, it can be tempting to wait and see whether symptoms settle before making the trip. With a suspected abscess, it is better to phone our Port Dover office early, describe what you are experiencing, and let the team advise how quickly you should be seen based on the symptoms.

Recognizing it

Infection can show up in several ways.

  • Common symptoms

Persistent or throbbing pain, a tooth that hurts to touch or bite on, sensitivity to heat, a bump on the gum that may release a salty or bad-tasting fluid, and mild swelling of the gum or face are typical signs. A tooth with a large filling, deep decay or past trauma is often the source, though an abscess can also start in the gum.

  • Signs that are more serious

Facial swelling that is increasing, swelling that spreads toward the eye or neck, fever, feeling generally unwell, or trouble opening the mouth, swallowing or breathing are signs the infection may be spreading. These situations need emergency medical assessment immediately. Do not delay hospital care while waiting for a dental appointment.

Before you are seen

Early contact helps the team plan your care.

  1. Phone the office promptly

Call the office and describe the location of the pain, how long it has been present, any swelling and whether you have a fever. Mention medical conditions, allergies and medications you take. The team can discuss appointment timing and what to watch for. If the office is closed and symptoms become severe, seek emergency medical care.

  2. Comfort measures at home

Rinsing gently with warm salt water may help keep the area clean. Over-the-counter pain relief taken according to the label and your health needs may ease discomfort. Avoid applying heat to the outside of the face. Do not try to pop or drain a gum swelling yourself, and do not place aspirin directly on the gum.

Treating the infection

Treatment focuses on the cause of the infection.

Draining and removing the source

After examination and usually an X-ray, the dentist will explain where the infection appears to be coming from. Treatment may involve draining the abscess, root canal treatment to clean the inside of the tooth, or extraction if the tooth cannot be saved. Gum-related abscesses may need deep cleaning of the area. The dentist will discuss the options with you.

The role of antibiotics

Antibiotics may be prescribed in some situations, such as spreading infection or certain health conditions, but they are not a substitute for treating the source. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed. Pain can return if the underlying problem is left untreated, even after antibiotics have temporarily reduced symptoms.

Recovery

Follow-through matters once the pain improves.

Healing in the days afterward

Some tenderness after treatment is common and usually improves over several days. Follow the aftercare instructions you are given, including eating on the other side and keeping the area clean. Contact the office if swelling increases, fever develops or pain becomes worse rather than better, since these may signal that further care is needed.

Completing the treatment plan

If a root canal was started, a final restoration such as a filling or crown is usually needed to protect the tooth. If a tooth was removed, discuss replacement options when healing allows. Attend recommended follow-up visits so the dentist can confirm the infection has resolved and the area is healing as expected.

Dental abscess questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Can a dental abscess go away without treatment?

Pain may ease if the abscess drains, but the infection usually remains and can spread. Dental treatment is needed to address the source. Contact the office promptly even if symptoms seem to improve on their own.

Will antibiotics cure an abscess?

Antibiotics may help control spreading infection in some cases, but they do not remove the cause. Treatment such as drainage, root canal or extraction is usually still required. Take any prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed.

When is an abscess an emergency?

Rapidly spreading swelling, swelling near the eye or neck, fever, or trouble breathing, swallowing or opening the mouth require emergency medical care immediately. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department in these situations.

Can the tooth be saved?

Often, yes, with root canal treatment followed by a suitable restoration. If the tooth is severely damaged or the infection is extensive, extraction may be recommended. The dentist will explain the options after examining the tooth.

Should I use heat on my swollen face?

It is generally advised to avoid heat on the outside of the face with a dental infection. A cold compress may be more appropriate for comfort. Follow the dental team’s advice and seek urgent care if swelling increases.
