An infection that needs attention

An abscess will not clear up by itself, so the source has to be treated.

A dental abscess is a pocket of infection, usually at the tip of a tooth root or in the gum beside a tooth. It can cause throbbing pain, tenderness when biting, a bad taste, a pimple-like bump on the gum, swelling and sometimes fever. Even when pain eases, the infection can still be present and spreading.

Anyone in Renton who suspects an abscess should call our Port Dover office promptly to describe the symptoms. The team can talk about urgency and appointment availability. Treatment focuses on draining the infection and dealing with its cause, whether that means root canal therapy, gum treatment or removing the tooth.

Recognize the signs

Some abscess symptoms are local, and some signal a wider problem.

  • Dental warning signs

Persistent or throbbing toothache, pain when chewing, sensitivity to hot foods, a swollen or tender gum, a small bump that may leak fluid and a foul taste are common signs. A tooth may feel slightly raised. Swollen glands under the jaw can also occur. Write down when symptoms started and how they have changed since.

  • Signs that need emergency care

Fever, swelling that spreads across the face or under the jaw, swelling near the eye, difficulty opening the mouth, trouble breathing or swallowing and feeling generally very unwell may mean the infection is spreading. These require emergency medical care right away. Do not wait for a dental appointment in those situations, even if one is booked.

Before you are seen

Comfort measures help, but they do not replace treatment.

  1. Managing discomfort safely

Rinsing gently with warm salt water may ease discomfort. An over-the-counter pain reliever that you can safely take may help; follow the package directions and ask a pharmacist if unsure. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek may reduce swelling. Sleep with your head slightly raised if lying flat increases throbbing at night.

  2. What to avoid

Do not apply heat to the face, place aspirin directly on the gum or try to pop a gum bump yourself. Avoid leftover antibiotics from previous illnesses. If pain suddenly stops, the infection may not be gone; keep your appointment. When you call, mention any medical conditions that might affect how infection is managed safely.

Treatment

The dentist identifies where the infection began and how to resolve it.

Draining and diagnosing

The dentist will examine the area, test the tooth and usually take an X-ray to see the extent of the infection. If there is a collection of pus, it may be drained to relieve pressure. Antibiotics are sometimes prescribed, particularly if infection is spreading, but they are generally used alongside treatment rather than in place of it.

Treating the source

When the infection comes from inside the tooth, root canal treatment may save it by cleaning the canals and sealing them. If the tooth cannot be restored, extraction may be recommended. Gum-related abscesses are treated by cleaning the pocket. The dentist will explain the options and what each involves before proceeding with care. You can ask questions first.

Recovery

Follow-up care helps make sure the infection resolves fully.

Healing at home

Follow the dentist’s instructions on pain relief, rinsing and eating. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them exactly as directed. Mild soreness is expected for a few days. Call the office if swelling increases, fever develops or pain worsens rather than improves, as these may signal the need for reassessment. Seek emergency care if breathing is affected.

Completing the treatment

An initial visit may focus on relieving symptoms, with further appointments needed to finish root canal therapy or place a permanent restoration. Keeping those appointments matters, as an incompletely treated tooth can become reinfected. Renton patients may want to plan the follow-up visits when booking to keep travel organized and treatment on schedule. Ask the team.

Dental abscess questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Can antibiotics cure a dental abscess?

Antibiotics may help control spreading infection, but they generally do not remove the source. The tooth or gum problem usually still needs treatment, such as drainage, root canal therapy or extraction, to resolve the abscess.

My pain went away. Do I still need treatment?

Yes. Pain can stop if the nerve dies or the abscess drains, but the infection may remain. Without treatment it can return or spread. Keep your appointment so the dentist can examine the tooth properly.

When should I go to the hospital instead?

Go to an emergency department or call 911 if you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward the eye or neck, or if you feel very unwell with a high fever. These need urgent medical care.

Can the tooth be saved?

Often, through root canal treatment, if enough healthy tooth remains. Sometimes extraction is the better option. The dentist will explain the outlook after examining the tooth and reviewing X-rays. You can ask about both options before deciding.

How can I prevent another abscess?

Treat cavities and cracked teeth early, keep gums healthy with daily brushing and cleaning between teeth, and attend regular checkups. Report tooth pain promptly so problems can be addressed before infection develops or spreads. Early care is simpler.
