Caring for Port Ryerse patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Port RyerseInfection needs attention
An abscess is a collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection, usually at the root tip of a tooth or within the gum. It can cause throbbing pain, swelling, a bad taste, fever or a small bump on the gum that drains. Sometimes pain eases when pus drains, but the infection remains and can spread.
If you notice these signs while in Port Ryerse, call our Port Dover office as soon as possible to describe your symptoms. The team can discuss how urgently you need to be seen and, when warning signs suggest a more serious infection, direct you to emergency medical care.

Spotting an abscess
Common signs include severe, persistent or throbbing toothache, pain when biting, sensitivity to hot or cold, a swollen or tender gum, a pimple-like bump that leaks fluid and a foul taste. A tooth may feel slightly raised or loose. Some abscesses develop around teeth that previously had large fillings or trauma.
Fever, swelling in the cheek, jaw or under the chin, feeling generally unwell, or swelling that spreads toward the eye or neck suggest the infection may be spreading. Difficulty opening the mouth, breathing or swallowing is an emergency. Seek immediate medical help in those situations rather than waiting.
Before you are seen
Rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is appropriate for you; follow package directions and any advice from your physician or pharmacist. A cool compress on the outside of the cheek can ease swelling. Keep your head elevated when resting.
Do not apply heat to the face, place aspirin directly on the gum or try to pop or drain the bump yourself. Avoid chewing on the affected side. Pain relief and rinses do not treat the infection itself, so continue to arrange dental care even if you feel somewhat better.
Treatment
The dentist examines the area and usually takes an X-ray to locate the source. Depending on the findings, treatment may include draining the abscess, root canal treatment to clean the infected inside of the tooth or extracting a tooth that cannot be saved. Gum abscesses may need deep cleaning of the pocket.
Antibiotics may be prescribed in some cases, particularly when there is spreading swelling or fever, but they do not remove the source. Treating the tooth itself is still necessary. Take any prescription exactly as directed and tell the dentist about allergies and other medications you take.
Recovery
Some tenderness is normal for a few days after drainage, root canal treatment or extraction. Follow aftercare instructions closely, keep the area clean and eat soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Contact the office if swelling increases, fever develops or pain worsens after initially improving.
Initial treatment may relieve the infection, but further appointments are often needed, such as completing root canal treatment and placing a crown. Leaving that work unfinished can allow infection to return or the tooth to fracture. Ask for a clear outline of next steps and timing.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office and describe your pain, any swelling, fever or a draining bump. The team will discuss urgency and the earliest appropriate option available.
Bring a list of medications and allergies. If symptoms escalate while you wait, go to an emergency department.

Antibiotics can help control spreading infection, but they generally do not eliminate the source inside the tooth or gum. Dental treatment such as drainage, root canal therapy or extraction is usually needed to resolve it.
Not necessarily. Pain may ease when pus drains or the nerve dies, but infection can remain and spread. An examination is still needed to confirm what is happening and treat the source.
Often, root canal treatment can save an abscessed tooth. If the tooth is badly broken, cracked or lacks bone support, extraction may be recommended. The dentist will explain the outlook for your tooth.
It can be. Untreated infection may spread to surrounding tissues and, rarely, become life-threatening. Swelling that affects breathing, swallowing or the eye requires emergency medical care immediately.
Dental infections should be assessed promptly. Call as soon as you notice symptoms. The team will consider your description and advise on timing, and they will direct you to emergency care if warning signs are present.
Root canal treatment clears infection from inside a tooth so it can be kept. Port Ryerse patients can learn what happens and how to plan care in Port Dover.
