Port Dover Family Dentistry
A photograph alone cannot diagnose a dental abscess. Call our Port Dover office with symptoms and their timing to discuss urgent assessment of a suspected infection.

All Port Dover dental servicesFind and address the source
Swelling, pain or drainage around a tooth can raise concern about an abscess. Explain when the symptoms began and how quickly they are changing instead of trying to confirm the diagnosis at home.
Our Port Dover team can discuss appropriate urgent assessment and availability. The treatment plan should identify the source and the care needed to address it, not only the immediate symptoms.

Report the progression
Give the clinician a sequence of events: when pain or swelling began, whether drainage occurred and whether you feel generally unwell. Include relevant medical conditions and medicines, together with care received elsewhere. The name and timing of any prescription help the treating provider understand what has already been tried.
Report changes after medication or drainage, including temporary improvement as well as worsening symptoms. Those changes contribute to assessment but do not establish that the source has resolved. Keep the provider informed while arrangements are being made rather than cancelling the plan solely because the area feels less painful.
Clinical investigation
The dentist examines the affected area and considers relevant records or images where appropriate. Different sources of infection can call for different treatment. Ask what the assessment establishes and how that leads to the proposed care, rather than selecting a procedure from the appearance of swelling or a photograph alone.
If a tooth is involved, discuss its condition, whether it can reasonably be retained and the alternatives suitable for those findings. Pain intensity alone cannot answer those questions. A clear explanation should distinguish the source requiring attention from the choice of procedure and any uncertainty that still affects the recommendation.
Treatment planning
Antibiotics may have a role in certain situations, but they do not replace dental treatment needed for the source. If medicine is prescribed, ask what it is intended to do and which procedure or review remains necessary. The prescription and the dental plan should be understood as connected decisions with different purposes.
Do not use leftover antibiotics or another person's prescription while waiting for assessment. Tell the clinician exactly what you have taken, when you took it and which provider prescribed it. An accurate history allows advice to account for care already received instead of leaving medication decisions disconnected across providers.
Follow-through
Before leaving the assessment, confirm what has been completed and what still needs attention. If another appointment or referral is required, establish who arranges it and the recommended timing. Knowing which person or office is responsible helps avoid a gap between initial relief and the treatment intended to address the underlying problem.
Report worsening symptoms during any wait. Rapidly spreading swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing requires immediate emergency medical care, as explained above; do not wait for a future dental appointment. Temporary relief is also a reason to update the clinician, not evidence that the unfinished part of the plan is no longer needed.
Planning your appointment
Give our Port Dover team the timing and progression, including any medical care already received. Do not delay urgent guidance while locating old records.
Confirm the assessment arrangements and keep medication details available. An online request does not provide immediate infection advice.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Appearance alone cannot reliably establish the cause. Contact the practice with symptoms and timing, then obtain appropriate assessment. The clinician needs more than a visible swelling to explain diagnosis and treatment.
Drainage may change discomfort without addressing the underlying source. Inform the treating clinician and keep recommended care unless advised otherwise. Do not squeeze or attempt to open the area yourself.
They do not replace necessary dental treatment of the source. Ask what further care is required and when, and share any prescription already received so treatment decisions remain connected across providers.
That depends on the source and condition of the tooth and tissues. Assessment determines whether retention is reasonable. Ask about suitable alternatives and the purpose of each recommended procedure before deciding.
Seek prompt professional guidance, and emergency medical care immediately for rapidly spreading swelling or breathing or swallowing difficulty. A future dental appointment is not a reason to delay help for serious symptoms.
Pain intensity alone cannot tell you whether a root canal is needed. Discuss symptoms, tests and the reasons behind a recommendation at our Port Dover office.
After medical care for facial swelling, share prescriptions and instructions with our Port Dover team. Dental assessment should build on the care already received.
