A dental abscess is a pocket of infection that can form at the tip of a tooth root or in the gum beside a tooth. It often follows deep decay, a cracked tooth or advanced gum disease. Symptoms can include throbbing pain, a bad taste, swelling, tenderness when biting and sometimes fever. Pain may ease if the abscess drains, but the infection usually remains.
If you are in Normandale and suspect an abscess, call our Port Dover office to describe your symptoms. The team can discuss how soon you need to be seen and what to do in the meantime, while emergency signs always go directly to hospital care.

Warning signs
Common signs include persistent or throbbing tooth pain, pain on biting, a swollen or tender gum, a pimple-like bump that may leak fluid and a salty or bitter taste. Some people notice swollen glands under the jaw. Any of these should prompt a call to the office so the tooth can be assessed promptly.
Swelling that spreads across the face or down the neck, difficulty opening your mouth, trouble swallowing or breathing, high fever and feeling very unwell can indicate a serious spreading infection. Do not wait for a dental appointment in these situations. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Assessment
The dentist looks at the swollen area, checks which tooth is tender to tapping or biting and examines the gum for pockets or drainage. Your medical history, medications and allergies are reviewed, since they influence treatment decisions, including whether antibiotics are appropriate in addition to dental care.
X-rays help show bone changes around the root and the extent of decay or previous treatment. Temperature tests can indicate whether the nerve is still alive. Combining these findings lets the dentist explain the likely cause and the options for removing the source of infection.
Treatment
In some cases the dentist drains the abscess to relieve pressure and reduce bacteria. Antibiotics may be prescribed when infection is spreading or you have certain health conditions, but they are generally not a substitute for treating the tooth. You will be told how to take any medication and what changes to watch for.
Root canal treatment can often remove infected tissue from inside the tooth and allow it to be kept. If the tooth is badly damaged or cannot be restored, extraction may be recommended. Gum-related abscesses may need cleaning beneath the gumline. The dentist will explain each option and its outlook.
Recovery
Some tenderness is normal for a few days. Follow instructions on pain relief, rinsing and eating, and finish any prescribed medication as directed. If swelling increases, fever develops or pain worsens rather than improving, contact the office promptly or seek emergency care if symptoms are severe.
An emergency visit may stabilize the problem, but further appointments are often needed, such as completing a root canal or placing a crown. Keeping those visits helps prevent the infection from returning. Regular checkups and good home care reduce the risk of new abscesses forming.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office as soon as you notice abscess symptoms and describe the pain, swelling and any fever. The team will discuss how quickly you should be seen based on what you report.
Bring a list of medicines and allergies. If you have already started antibiotics from another provider, mention that too.

Symptoms sometimes ease if the abscess drains, but the infection usually remains and can return or spread. Dental treatment is needed to remove the source, even if the pain improves.
Antibiotics may help control spreading infection, but they generally do not resolve the cause inside or around the tooth. Root canal treatment, drainage or extraction is usually required.
Go to emergency or call 911 for rapidly spreading swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling near the eye, high fever or feeling very unwell. These can signal a serious infection.
Heat is generally not recommended for dental swelling because it may encourage spread. A cool compress on the outside of the cheek can help. Call the office for guidance specific to your symptoms.
Often it can with root canal treatment, depending on how much healthy structure remains. Sometimes extraction is the better option. The dentist will explain the outlook after examination.
