A dental abscess is a pocket of infection, usually at the tip of a tooth root or in the gum beside a tooth. It can cause throbbing pain, tenderness when biting, a bad taste, a pimple-like bump on the gum, swelling or fever. Sometimes the pain fades if the abscess drains, but the infection remains and can spread if the source is not treated.
If you are at Long Point and suspect an abscess, call our Port Dover office early in the day and describe your symptoms. The team can discuss urgency and arrange an assessment based on availability and clinical need.

Warning signs
Common signs include persistent throbbing pain, a tooth that hurts when touched or chewed on, a swollen or tender gum, a bump that releases salty or foul fluid, a bad taste and sensitivity to heat. Swollen glands under the jaw or a mild fever can accompany infection. These symptoms deserve a call to the dental office the same day.
Swelling that spreads toward the eye or down the neck, difficulty opening the mouth, trouble swallowing or breathing, high fever or feeling very unwell are signs the infection may be spreading. These require emergency medical care immediately. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or are struggling to breathe.
Assessment
The dentist examines the swollen area, checks which tooth is tender and looks for deep decay, cracks, failed fillings or gum pockets. Expect questions about when symptoms started, any recent dental work and what pain relief you have tried. Your medical history and allergies matter, especially if antibiotics might be considered.
X-rays help show bone changes at the root tip or around the tooth. Tests for sensitivity may help identify whether the nerve is still alive. Together these findings help the dentist explain whether the abscess comes from the nerve inside the tooth, the gum around it, or both.
Treatment
Depending on the cause, treatment may involve draining the abscess, root canal treatment to clean the inside of the tooth or extraction if the tooth cannot be saved. A gum abscess may be cleaned and treated at the pocket. The dentist will explain why one option is recommended and what each involves.
Antibiotics may be prescribed in some situations, such as spreading infection or certain medical conditions, but they do not remove the source. Pain may return after a course ends if the tooth is not treated. Take any prescription exactly as directed and report side effects promptly.
Recovery
Some tenderness after treatment is common. Follow the dentist’s advice about pain relief, rinsing and eating. Swelling should gradually ease. If it increases, fever develops or you feel worse rather than better, contact the office promptly or seek medical care if symptoms become severe.
If a root canal was started, the tooth often needs a final restoration such as a crown to protect it. Missing that step can leave the tooth vulnerable to fracture or reinfection. Keep follow-up appointments, and if you are leaving the area, ask how to complete care in a timely way.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Pain may ease if the abscess drains, but the infection usually remains. Without treating the source, it can return or spread. An assessment is needed to clear the infection properly.
Antibiotics can help control spreading infection in some cases, but they do not remove the cause inside or around the tooth. Dental treatment is generally needed to resolve the abscess.
Avoid applying heat to the outside of the face, which may encourage swelling. A cool compress may feel better. Call the office for advice, and seek emergency care if swelling spreads.
No. Squeezing or piercing the area can introduce more bacteria and cause injury. Rinse gently with warm salt water and call the office to have the area assessed.
It depends on whether the tooth can be restored and your preferences. The dentist will explain the outlook for keeping the tooth, alternatives and what each option involves before you decide.
A root canal removes infected or inflamed pulp so a tooth can be kept. Long Point patients can learn what treatment involves and how recovery goes in Port Dover.
A swollen cheek or jaw can signal a spreading dental infection. Long Point patients should know when to call 911 and when to phone our Port Dover office.
