Grinding and clenching during sleep can wear down enamel, crack teeth and strain jaw muscles. A custom night guard is a thin appliance made to fit over your upper or lower teeth, absorbing pressure and reducing direct contact between them. Because it is shaped to your mouth, it is usually more comfortable and secure than an over-the-counter version.
If you live in Windham Centre and wake with a sore jaw or have been told you grind, our Port Dover office can assess your teeth and bite and discuss whether a custom guard is a sensible step. The fitting process usually involves two short appointments.

Who benefits
Flattened or chipped teeth, morning jaw tightness, headaches near the temples and sensitivity from worn enamel are common signs. A partner may hear grinding sounds. Some people notice their teeth look shorter over the years. The dentist can compare current wear with past records to judge whether protection is advisable for you right now or later.
Crowns, veneers, bridges and large fillings can chip or loosen under heavy grinding forces. A guard helps protect these investments. If you are planning cosmetic or restorative work and know you grind, the dentist may suggest a guard as part of the treatment plan so the new restorations last as long as reasonably possible in your mouth.
Getting fitted
At the first visit the dentist examines your teeth, jaw muscles and joints and discusses symptoms. Impressions or a digital scan capture the shape of your teeth, and a bite record shows how they meet. The dentist will explain the type of guard recommended, such as a hard or softer material, and why it suits your situation.
When the guard is ready, you try it in and the dentist checks fit and bite contact, making adjustments so it sits evenly and feels secure. You will learn how to insert and remove it. Ask any questions about cleaning, storage and what to expect in the first few nights while you get used to wearing it.
Wearing it
It may take several nights to adjust to sleeping with a guard. Some people notice extra saliva or mild pressure at first. Keep wearing it each night unless you develop pain, a change in bite or sore spots on the gums. In that case, call the office so the dentist can check the fit and make adjustments.
In the morning, rinse the guard, brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and cool water, and let it dry before storing in its case. Avoid hot water and do not leave it in a hot vehicle or where pets can reach it. Clean the case regularly too. Bring the guard to checkups for inspection.
Follow-up
At regular dental visits, the dentist can examine the guard for cracks, thinning or bite marks that suggest heavy grinding. They will also check your teeth and jaw. If symptoms such as headaches or jaw pain persist despite wearing the guard, further evaluation of the jaw joint or sleep habits may be recommended as a next step.
A guard may need replacing if it becomes loose, cracked or no longer fits after dental work such as a new crown. Changes in your teeth can affect how well it sits. Call the office if the guard feels different, causes discomfort or has visible damage, rather than continuing to use it unchanged night after night.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to arrange a night guard consultation. Mention grinding sounds, jaw soreness or worn teeth so the team can plan an appropriate exam for you and your bite.
If you have an existing guard, bring it so the dentist can assess its fit and whether replacement is needed.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
A guard mainly protects your teeth and reduces strain. It may not stop the habit itself. Many people find jaw and tooth symptoms improve. The dentist can discuss other ways to reduce clenching if needed.
It depends on how heavily you grind and how well it is cared for. Some guards last several years, while others wear faster. Regular inspection at checkups helps decide when a replacement is due, rather than guessing.
Each has advantages depending on your grinding pattern, comfort and jaw symptoms. The dentist will recommend a material suited to your situation and explain the reasoning. Heavy grinders and people with jaw soreness may be advised differently.
If you can breathe comfortably, you can generally continue. If congestion makes it difficult, it is reasonable to leave it out for a night or two. Clean it carefully once you are well and resume regular use.
Mild changes that disappear quickly may be normal at first. If your bite feels off for an extended time or you develop jaw pain, contact the office so the guard can be checked and adjusted.
