Custom appliance assessments and fitting visits take place in Port Dover
All dental services for WaterfordAn appliance needs a defined job
A guard made for your teeth should begin with an explanation of why it is being considered. Worn edges, damaged dental work and a report of grinding may lead to a conversation about protection, but they do not make every appliance suitable. The condition of your mouth and the symptoms you describe guide that decision.
Waterford residents can arrange an assessment at our Port Dover practice before a fitting is planned. Bring a guard you already use and explain what feels uncomfortable or ineffective. A useful consultation connects the proposed design with its purpose, the care it needs and the signs that should prompt another review.

Check the starting point
Describe recent restorations, tooth movement and treatment already planned, including work with another provider. Ask whether those appointments should happen before records are taken for a guard. Coordinating the sequence lets you understand which mouth changes the design needs to account for and avoids treating the fitting as unrelated to the rest of your care.
Describe jaw discomfort, morning symptoms and any concerns about breathing during sleep. These questions may require assessment beyond a protective device. A night guard intended for grinding is not interchangeable with a sports mouthguard, orthodontic retainer or prescribed sleep-apnea appliance.
Understand the fitting process
Ask which appointments cover records and delivery before planning the trips to Port Dover. At the fitting, describe pressure or difficulty seating the guard while the clinician checks its position and the tooth contacts. A custom design still needs this assessment in your mouth; do not leave a concern unexplained because you assume the appliance must fit correctly by definition.
Practise putting the device in and taking it out with the team. Ask what level of snugness is intended and what should lead you to stop and call. Do not force a guard over changed teeth or rely on biting it into place when it no longer seats as instructed.
Build a manageable care routine
Have the team demonstrate cleaning and confirm the suitable products, water temperature and storage method for this guard. Ask how appliance care fits with brushing and preparing your mouth for wear. Keep those instructions accessible at home so a change in routine or a trip away does not lead to using a cleaning method intended for a different device.
Keep it away from heat, pets and situations where it can be crushed or mistaken for rubbish. If it cracks, becomes distorted or develops a rough edge, contact the practice. Household glue, boiling water and home reshaping can change its safety and fit.
Make follow-up part of ownership
Bring the appliance to requested reviews and tell the dentist about new dental work before relying on a fit that feels uncertain. Ask what the wear pattern and tooth assessment show about continued use. If adjustment or replacement is recommended, understand the specific reason; the time since purchase is only part of its history, not a complete assessment of suitability.
Report jaw pain, unusual tooth pressure or a lasting change in how the teeth meet. Protection does not guarantee that grinding stops, and persistent symptoms deserve their own discussion. Ask what success means for your appliance and which findings will be used to judge that at the next visit.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover team about the reason you are considering a guard and any existing device. Confirm whether the booking covers assessment, records, delivery or an adjustment so you know what to bring.
Mention treatment scheduled with another provider and ask how it affects timing. Bring questions about costs, maintenance and follow-up before agreeing to have a new appliance made.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Bring the old appliance because its fit and wear may be useful to review. The dentist still needs to assess your current teeth and the intended purpose. Dental work or movement since the earlier fitting may mean the previous design or records are no longer suitable.
Ask the clinician to demonstrate the intended removal method and assess any excessive tightness. Do not force the device or bend it to change the fit. Being able to place and remove it safely is something to confirm before routine use at home.
A protective night guard is not a substitute for a medically directed sleep-apnea plan. Discuss snoring, breathing pauses or sleepiness with the appropriate clinician. Appliances used for sleep-related breathing conditions have a different purpose, assessment and follow-up process.
Tell the treating dentist that you use an appliance and bring it for review. A restoration can change how it seats or contacts the teeth. Ask whether adjustment or replacement is needed rather than forcing a previously comfortable guard over the new crown.
Ask for a review when the guard is damaged, distorted or no longer fits, and bring it to scheduled examinations. The decision depends on its condition and usefulness for your mouth. Do not judge solely by its age or by whether you can still put it in.
A new broken filling need not wait for a planned grinding review. Our Waterford bruxism page separates attention to damaged teeth from ongoing clenching management.
Already bought a grinding guard that feels uncomfortable? Bring it from Waterford and explain when you use it, the pressure you feel and any change in symptoms.
