Grinding and clenching during sleep can wear enamel, crack fillings and leave the jaw muscles aching. A custom night guard is a removable appliance made from a model of your teeth. It sits over the upper or lower arch and provides a smooth surface that absorbs much of the force, helping protect your teeth while you sleep.
Walsingham residents can have a night guard assessed, designed and fitted at our Port Dover office. The dentist will first confirm that a guard is appropriate, since jaw pain and wear can have several causes, and then explain the type of appliance recommended and how to look after it.

Is a guard needed?
Worn or flattened teeth, chipped edges, sore jaw muscles on waking and a partner hearing grinding noises all suggest nocturnal bruxism. Some people also notice tooth sensitivity or headaches near the temples. Share these observations with the dentist, along with any history of broken fillings or crowns.
Jaw pain can also come from joint problems, dental infection or other conditions. Loud snoring or pauses in breathing during sleep should be mentioned, since these may need medical evaluation before a dental appliance is chosen. The dentist examines teeth, muscles and joints to make sure a guard addresses the right problem.
Design and fit
The dentist takes an impression or digital scan of your teeth and records how your jaws come together. These records are used to make a guard that matches your bite. The material and thickness depend on how heavily you grind and your comfort preferences, and the dentist will explain the reasons for the design chosen.
At the fitting appointment, you try the guard in. The dentist checks that it seats fully, does not rock and lets your teeth meet evenly against it. Small adjustments are made as needed. You will be shown how to insert and remove it, and given advice for the first few nights while you get used to wearing it.
Getting used to it
A new guard can feel bulky at first and may cause extra saliva or mild pressure on the teeth. These sensations usually ease as you get used to it. Putting the guard in just before sleep and wearing it every night tends to help. Some people feel a slightly different bite for a few minutes after removing it in the morning.
If the guard causes sharp pressure, sore gums, jaw pain that was not there before or a bite that feels off for long periods during the day, call the office. These may signal that the guard needs adjusting. Do not try to trim or reshape it yourself, as this can affect how it protects your teeth.
Care and checkups
Each morning, rinse the guard, brush it gently with a soft brush and cool water, and let it dry before storing it in its ventilated case. Avoid hot water, which may warp it. Keep it out of reach of pets, who are often drawn to chew appliances. Clean the case regularly too.
Bring the guard to checkups so the dentist can inspect it for wear, cracks or changes in fit. Over time, dental work or natural tooth movement can make a guard fit differently. Heavy grinders may wear through a guard faster. The dentist can advise when adjustment, repair or replacement is appropriate.
Planning your appointment
When booking at our Port Dover office, mention grinding symptoms, jaw discomfort and any recently broken teeth. The team can explain how many visits are usually needed to make and fit the guard.
If you have an old guard, bring it. Let the team know about snoring or sleep concerns so these can be considered during the assessment.
Before you book

Both can work. The choice depends on your bite, dental work, comfort and what the dentist is trying to achieve. The dentist will recommend the design that suits your situation and explain why.
It depends on how heavily you grind and how well the guard is cared for. Some last several years, while heavy grinders may need replacement sooner. Regular checkups help track wear.
It may ease muscle discomfort for some people by reducing clenching forces. Jaw pain has many causes, though, so the dentist assesses the joints and muscles to decide whether a guard is likely to help.
No. A sports guard is designed to absorb impact during activity, while a night guard protects against grinding forces during sleep. They differ in thickness, fit and design, and are not interchangeable.
Mention it. Snoring may be linked to sleep apnea, which needs medical assessment. A standard night guard is not designed to treat sleep-related breathing issues and may not be appropriate in some cases.
