Protection while you sleep

A guard made for your teeth fits better and is easier to wear.

A custom night guard is a hard or layered appliance made from impressions or a scan of your teeth. Worn during sleep, it places a protective surface between upper and lower teeth so grinding and clenching land on the guard instead of your enamel, fillings or crowns. Fit is what separates it from a store-bought version.

Those living in Vanessa can have a guard assessed, made and fitted through our Port Dover office. The process usually takes a couple of short visits, and along the way the dentist will also look at whether anything else, such as jaw pain, headaches or heavy snoring, deserves its own attention.

Why a guard

Guards protect teeth from forces you cannot control at night.

Signs a guard may help

Worn or flattened teeth, chipped edges, cracked fillings, sore jaw muscles in the morning and tension headaches can all suggest nighttime grinding or clenching. A partner may hear the grinding long before you notice any symptoms yourself. The dentist looks for characteristic wear patterns and asks about your sleep, stress levels and jaw comfort before recommending a guard.

What a guard can and cannot do

A night guard reduces wear and spreads pressure across the teeth, but it does not necessarily stop the habit itself. If snoring, gasping or daytime exhaustion are also present, a medical sleep evaluation may be needed, because a standard night guard is not a treatment for sleep apnea and could even be the wrong appliance in that situation.

Making the guard

Two short appointments usually cover it.

  1. Impressions or scans

At the first visit the dentist examines your teeth and bite and takes impressions or a digital scan. The guard is then fabricated to fit snugly over one arch, most often the upper. You can ask about thickness and material, since some people prefer a slimmer profile or a softer inner lining, and the dentist can explain the trade-offs of each.

  2. Delivery and adjustment

When the guard is ready, the dentist checks how it seats, whether your bite meets it evenly and whether anything presses on the gums or palate. Small adjustments are made right there in the chair. You will also learn how to put it in and take it out without bending or stressing the material, which helps it last.

Getting used to it

Expect a short adjustment period.

  • Comfort and saliva

Many people notice extra saliva or an unfamiliar feeling for the first few nights. That usually settles within a week or two as your mouth adapts. Wear the guard every night so the adjustment happens faster. If you wake up and find it on the pillow, slip it back in when you can and keep going; that habit fades with time.

  • When to return for a check

If the guard feels tight, causes tooth soreness that persists past the first days, or changes how your teeth meet in the morning for more than a short while, call the office. A brief adjustment often resolves it. Do not try to trim, file or heat the guard at home, since that can ruin the fit.

Caring for it

A clean, intact guard does its job longer.

Daily cleaning

Rinse and gently brush the guard each morning with cool water and a little mild soap, then let it air dry before storing it. Avoid hot water, which can warp the material. Keep it in its vented case, out of reach of curious pets and away from heat such as a sunny dashboard or a spot beside the woodstove.

Checkups and replacement

Bring the guard to your regular checkups so the dentist can look for wear, cracks or changes in fit. Heavy grinders may wear through a guard over a few years. New dental work such as a crown or large filling can also affect how it seats, so mention any recent changes in your mouth at each visit.

Planning your appointment

Getting fitted when you live near Vanessa

Call our Port Dover office to arrange an examination and impressions for a night guard. Two visits are usually needed, so ask about appointment times that suit your schedule and the season.

If you have an old guard, bring it along so the dentist can see how it has worn and whether the new design should change.

Night guard questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Is a custom guard better than a drugstore guard?

A custom guard is made to fit your own teeth closely, which usually improves comfort, stability and durability. Drugstore guards can feel bulky or loose and may shift during sleep. The dentist can explain which option makes sense for your situation.

Will a night guard stop my grinding?

It mainly protects your teeth from the effects of grinding rather than stopping the habit itself. Reducing stress, cutting back on caffeine and alcohol in the evening, and improving sleep habits may also help some people grind less.

How long does a night guard last?

It depends on how heavily you grind and how well the guard is cared for. Some last several years, while very heavy grinders wear through them sooner. Bringing it to checkups lets the dentist monitor wear and recommend replacement at the right time.

Can I wear a guard if I have crowns or fillings?

Yes, and a guard often helps protect that dental work from chipping. If you have new crowns, bridges or large fillings placed, the guard may need adjusting or remaking so it continues to fit properly and evenly.

Can a guard cause jaw pain?

A poorly fitted guard can sometimes contribute to jaw discomfort. If soreness increases after you start wearing one, or your bite feels different, call the office so the fit and how your teeth meet the guard can be checked and adjusted.
