A custom night guard is an appliance made from a mould or scan of your teeth. It fits snugly over the upper or lower arch and provides a barrier between teeth that grind or clench at night. Because it follows your bite closely, it tends to stay in place and feel less bulky than generic versions.
For Renton residents, the process starts with an exam at our Port Dover office to confirm that a guard is appropriate. The dentist will explain the design being recommended, how many visits are needed and what to expect during the first nights of wear as you get used to it.

Why a custom guard
Store-bought guards can be loose or thick, which some people find hard to sleep with. A custom guard is shaped to your teeth and bite, which can make it more stable and easier to tolerate. A guard that is comfortable is more likely to be worn consistently, and consistency is what provides protection night after night.
Grinding can wear down enamel and damage crowns, veneers and fillings. A night guard absorbs much of that force. If you have had extensive dental work, the dentist may suggest a guard specifically to help protect your investment. Ask how the guard design accounts for any restorations you have. New dental work may call for a new guard later.
Getting fitted
The dentist first examines your teeth, jaw muscles and joints and confirms signs of grinding or clenching. Impressions or a digital scan are then taken. You may also be asked to bite on a material that records how your jaws meet. These records are used to create a guard tailored to your mouth and bite.
At the second visit, the guard is tried in and checked for fit. The dentist may adjust the biting surface so your teeth meet evenly. You will be shown how to insert, remove and clean it. If anything feels tight or sore after a few nights, the guard can often be fine-tuned at a follow-up visit.
Getting used to it
In the first nights, you might notice extra saliva, a slight feeling of pressure or a change in how your bite feels in the morning. These usually settle within days or a couple of weeks. Wearing the guard every night helps your mouth adapt faster than wearing it only occasionally. Keep it by the bed as a reminder.
Contact the office if the guard causes sharp pain, sore spots on the gums, jaw pain that worsens or a bite that stays off after removing it. These may signal that an adjustment is needed. Do not try to trim or reshape the guard yourself, as that can damage it or affect the fit permanently.
Care and replacement
Rinse the guard each morning and clean it gently with a soft brush and cool water or a cleaner recommended by the team. Let it air dry, then store it in its case. Keep it away from heat, sunlight on a dashboard and household pets, which are often drawn to the smell and may chew it.
Bring the guard to each checkup so the dentist can inspect it for cracks, thinning or warping. Heavy grinders may wear through a guard over time. Changes in your teeth, such as new crowns or fillings, can also affect the fit. The dentist will tell you when repair or replacement is advisable for continued protection.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 to arrange an exam for a night guard. Mention symptoms such as morning jaw pain, headaches or worn teeth so the team can plan the visit.
If you already use a store-bought guard, bring it along so the dentist can compare fit and discuss improvements before a new one is made.

A guard mainly protects your teeth and may ease muscle strain. It does not always stop the habit. The dentist can discuss other factors such as stress or sleep that may contribute to grinding at night.
Custom guards are made to fit your teeth closely and are often more comfortable and stable. Pharmacy guards may be adequate for some people but can be bulky or loose. Ask the dentist which suits your needs.
It varies with grinding intensity and care. Some last several years, while heavy grinders may need replacement sooner. Regular inspections help the dentist judge when a guard is wearing out. Bring it to each checkup.
The dentist will recommend which arch based on your bite, comfort and dental work. Both upper and lower designs are used, and the choice depends on individual factors. The dentist will explain the reasoning behind the choice.
Some people with jaw muscle soreness from clenching feel better with a guard. Results vary. If jaw pain persists or worsens, the dentist can assess further and discuss other approaches, such as TMJ care or physiotherapy.
Grinding at night can chip teeth and leave your jaw sore by morning. Renton patients can ask whether a night guard would help and how it is fitted.
Waking with a sore jaw or noticing flattened teeth? Renton patients can have clenching and grinding assessed and discuss protection at our Port Dover office.
