A cracked tooth may not look broken at all. Many people notice a quick, sharp pain when biting or releasing, sensitivity to cold that comes and goes, or discomfort they cannot pin to a single tooth. Cracks can deepen with continued chewing, so early assessment often leaves more options for saving the tooth.
Patients from Vanessa can have a suspected crack examined at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain what is found, how far the crack seems to extend and which repair would best protect the tooth from splitting further, along with what each option means for the tooth long term.

Recognizing a crack
Pain when biting down, or a sudden twinge when letting go of a bite, is typical. Sensitivity to temperature, especially cold, may appear and then fade for days. Some people feel a rough edge with their tongue. Symptoms are often intermittent, which makes it tempting to wait, but cracks do not heal and they frequently spread with ordinary chewing.
Grinding, clenching, chewing ice or hard objects, large old fillings and accidents can all contribute to cracks. Teeth that have had root canal treatment without a crown are also at higher risk because they tend to be more brittle. Mention any of these factors when you book so the dentist knows what to look for.
Diagnosis
The dentist may ask you to bite on a small tool one cusp at a time, shine a bright light through the tooth, apply a dye to highlight a fracture line or test how the tooth responds to cold. Magnification helps reveal very fine lines. Sometimes an old filling needs to be removed before the full extent of a crack can be seen.
Many cracks do not show clearly on X-rays, particularly early ones. X-rays are still useful to check the surrounding bone and the root for related problems. The dentist will tell you honestly how confident they are about the diagnosis, and whether monitoring or prompt repair is the wiser course for that particular tooth right now.
Repair options
Small surface cracks and chips may be sealed or rebuilt with bonded composite. When one cusp is cracked but the rest of the tooth is sound, an onlay can cover and brace the weakened area. These options keep more natural tooth than a full crown does, when the location and depth of the crack allow it.
A crown is often recommended to hold a cracked tooth together and spread biting forces evenly. If the crack has reached the nerve, root canal treatment may be needed first. A crack that splits the root vertically usually means the tooth cannot be saved, and the dentist would then discuss replacement options with you in detail.
Protecting the tooth
Until the tooth is repaired, chew on the other side and avoid very hard, chewy or sticky foods. Over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed on the label may help. If the tooth begins to throb, swell or keep you awake at night, call the office promptly, because that can mean the nerve is becoming involved.
After repair, a night guard may be recommended if grinding contributed to the crack. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy, popcorn kernels or nutshells. Regular checkups allow the dentist to watch other teeth with large fillings for early signs of cracking, so they can be reinforced before they become painful or break apart unexpectedly during a meal.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe the pain, when it happens and which side of the mouth it seems to come from. The team can arrange an examination to look for a crack and explain next steps.
Note anything that triggers the pain, such as cold drinks or biting certain foods, and mention any grinding or clenching habits you know of.
Before you book

No. Teeth cannot repair cracks the way bones mend. Treatment aims to stop the crack from spreading and to protect what remains of the tooth, so having it assessed early usually leaves more options and a better chance of keeping it.
Cracks often hurt only when biting at certain angles or with temperature changes, because the pieces flex slightly apart and irritate the inner tooth. That on-and-off pattern is very common and is one reason cracks can be difficult to track down.
Often, but not always. Small cracks may be bonded or covered with an onlay instead. The dentist recommends a crown when the tooth needs complete support to resist splitting further under normal everyday chewing forces.
Yes, if the crack has irritated or exposed the nerve inside the tooth. The dentist tests the tooth’s response to judge whether nerve treatment is needed before it is restored, and explains what signs pointed in that direction.
If a crack runs down through the root, extraction may be advised. The dentist will then discuss replacement options such as an implant, a bridge or a partial denture, including the time and visits each would involve.
A crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth. Vanessa patients can learn when crowns are recommended, what the two visits involve and how to make one last.
