A crack can be hard to spot, even on an X-ray. Many people describe a sudden, sharp pain when chewing a certain way, or a twinge when they release their bite, rather than constant aching. Others notice sensitivity to cold. Because cracks can spread, getting the tooth evaluated sooner rather than later usually widens the options.
If you are in Renton and suspect a cracked tooth, call our Port Dover office to describe the symptoms. The dentist will look for the source, explain how deep the crack appears to go and talk about whether the tooth can be repaired, protected or, in some cases, needs to be removed.

Recognizing a crack
Pain that comes and goes with chewing, especially on hard or chewy foods, is a classic sign. Some people feel discomfort only when releasing pressure. Sensitivity to temperature, a rough spot your tongue keeps finding or gum tenderness near one tooth may also point to a crack. Note which tooth and what triggers the pain.
Biting on something hard, grinding or clenching, large older fillings that weaken surrounding enamel and sudden temperature changes can all contribute. A blow to the mouth is another cause. Mention any of these when you call, since they help the dentist understand how the crack may have formed and how far it might reach. Be as specific as you can.
Diagnosis
During the exam, the dentist may have you bite on a special instrument to see which part of the tooth triggers pain. Cold tests can show how the nerve is responding. Gums around the tooth are checked for localized swelling or pocketing, which can indicate a deeper fracture extending toward the root below. This affects the options.
X-rays help rule out other problems, though cracks themselves may not show. Magnification, special lighting or dye can make a crack line easier to see. In some cases the full extent only becomes clear once an old filling is removed. The dentist will explain the findings and any uncertainty that remains about the outlook. Ask questions freely.
Repair options
A small crack confined to the enamel may need only monitoring or a bonded filling. More often, a crown or onlay is recommended to hold the tooth together and reduce flexing when chewing. The dentist will explain why covering the cusps can help and what preparation of the tooth would involve at each visit. Two visits are typical.
If the crack reaches the nerve, root canal treatment may be needed before the tooth is crowned. A crack that extends deep into the root can mean the tooth is unlikely to be saved, and extraction with replacement options may be discussed. Ask about the outlook for each approach before deciding what to do. Take the time you need.
Afterward
Until the tooth is treated, chew on the other side, avoid very hard or sticky foods and be careful with extremes of temperature. If a temporary crown is placed, follow instructions about flossing and eating. Call the office if pain becomes constant, swelling develops or the tooth feels loose. These changes deserve a prompt look.
After repair, keep up regular checkups so the dentist can monitor the tooth. If you grind or clench, ask about a night guard to reduce strain on your teeth. Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels or hard objects. Even repaired teeth can develop problems, so report changes in sensation promptly rather than waiting for a routine visit.
Planning your appointment
Call 519-583-2929 to book an assessment at our Port Dover office. Describe when the pain occurs and which tooth seems to be involved, and mention any swelling or fever you have noticed.
If a piece has broken off, bring it. Note any recent dental work on that tooth as well, including where it was done.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Teeth do not repair cracks naturally. Some small enamel cracks remain stable, but others spread over time. An examination helps the dentist judge whether monitoring or treatment is the better course for that tooth.
Cracks can open slightly under certain biting pressures, irritating the inner tooth, then close when pressure is released. That is why pain can be sharp and intermittent rather than constant. Note which foods trigger it.
Not always. If the nerve is healthy, a crown or onlay may be enough. If the nerve is inflamed or infected, root canal treatment may be recommended first. The dentist will explain after testing the tooth.
A crack extending deep into the root often means the tooth cannot be reliably saved. The dentist may then discuss extraction and options for replacing the tooth, such as an implant, bridge or partial denture.
Avoid chewing very hard items, wear a night guard if you grind and keep large fillings monitored at checkups. Protecting weakened teeth with crowns when recommended can also lower the risk of future fractures noticeably.
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth weakened by decay, fracture or a large filling. Renton residents can see how crowns are planned and placed.
