Cracked teeth often cause a brief, sharp pain when biting down or releasing, or a twinge of sensitivity to cold that comes and goes. Because cracks can be very fine and sometimes run below the gumline, they do not always show up on X-rays. Left untreated, a crack may spread, leading to a broken cusp, an infected nerve or, in some cases, a tooth that cannot be kept.
If you live in Hillcrest and suspect a cracked tooth, our Port Dover office can help track down the problem. The dentist will test the teeth involved, explain how far the crack seems to extend and describe which repair is most likely to hold the tooth together and keep it comfortable.

Symptoms
Many people describe pain that appears only when chewing certain foods or biting at a particular angle. The tooth may react to cold or sweet foods and then feel completely normal for days. That on-and-off pattern can make it surprisingly hard to pinpoint which tooth is involved, especially toward the back of the mouth, where cracks tend to be most common in adults.
Before your visit, note which side hurts, which foods set it off and whether you clench, grind or recently bit something hard such as a popcorn kernel. Large older fillings can weaken the walls of a tooth and make cracks more likely. Sharing these details helps the dentist decide where to focus testing and saves time during the examination itself.
Diagnosis
The dentist may use magnification, a bright light shone through the tooth, bite testing on individual cusps and cold tests to reproduce your symptoms. Existing fillings are examined closely for fine lines at their edges. X-rays can reveal related problems, such as infection or bone changes, even when the crack itself stays hidden. Sometimes the full extent is clear only once an old filling is removed.
A crack confined to the outer part of the tooth is managed very differently from one that reaches the nerve or travels down the root. The dentist will explain what the tests suggest and how certain they are. It is reasonable to ask what might change once treatment begins, since the true depth of a crack is not always visible until the tooth is opened.
Repair options
Small, shallow cracks may be treated with bonding or a filling, but many cracked back teeth do better with a crown or onlay that covers and braces the cusps. Covering the tooth reduces the flexing that allows a crack to grow with each bite. The dentist will discuss which option suits the location of the crack, the forces on that tooth and how much healthy structure remains.
If the crack has irritated or infected the nerve, root canal treatment may be recommended before the tooth is crowned. When a crack splits the tooth or runs deep into the root, extraction may be the only realistic option, followed by a conversation about replacement. The dentist will explain the outlook honestly so you can make an informed decision rather than a rushed one.
Afterwards
Until the final restoration is in place, avoid chewing hard or sticky foods on the affected side and treat any temporary crown or filling gently. If pain becomes constant, swelling appears or a piece of tooth breaks away, contact the office promptly. These changes can mean the crack has progressed, and the plan or timing of treatment may need to be reconsidered.
If clenching or grinding played a part, a night guard may help protect the repaired tooth and its neighbours. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy and unpopped kernels, and do not use your teeth as tools. Regular checkups give the dentist a chance to spot early signs of cracking in other teeth, particularly those carrying large fillings, before they cause pain.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office and describe when the tooth hurts, what triggers it and which side seems affected. The team can arrange an appointment focused on locating the problem and protecting the tooth before the crack has a chance to grow.
If the pain becomes constant or swelling develops before your visit, call again so the team can reassess how urgently you should be seen.
Before you book

Biting can push the two sides of a crack apart slightly, irritating the inner tissues of the tooth. When pressure is released, the crack closes and may cause another flash of pain. An examination with bite testing can help confirm whether a crack is responsible.
No. Enamel and dentin cannot knit a crack back together. Treatment aims to stabilize the tooth and stop the crack from spreading further. Delaying care can allow it to deepen, so it is best to have the tooth assessed while more options remain.
Not always. Many cracked teeth are managed successfully with a crown or onlay alone. If the nerve becomes inflamed or infected, root canal treatment may be recommended as well. The dentist will explain the findings and why a particular approach is advised.
Many cracks run in a direction that does not appear on a standard X-ray image. The dentist relies on other tests, such as bite testing and magnification, to find them. X-rays are still useful for checking bone, infection and other related problems.
If a crack extends too deep into the root, the dentist may recommend removing the tooth. You can then discuss replacement options such as an implant, bridge or partial denture, depending on your health, the space involved and your own preferences.
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth weakened by decay, cracks or large fillings. Hillcrest patients can discuss materials and steps in Port Dover.
Chipped a tooth? Hillcrest patients can call our Port Dover office to describe the break, protect the tooth meanwhile and learn which repair might be suitable.
