A cracked tooth can be surprisingly hard to pinpoint. Pain may come and go, appear only when biting a certain way or show up as a quick jolt when you let go of a bite. Some cracks stay shallow for years, while others gradually deepen toward the nerve or split the tooth.
If chewing on one side of your mouth has started to feel unpredictable, Glen Meyer patients can have the tooth examined at our Port Dover office. Finding a crack early often allows a simpler repair and helps reduce the risk of the tooth breaking further.

Noticing symptoms
Brief, sharp pain when biting down, especially on something firm, or a twinge when releasing pressure is a classic sign. Sensitivity to cold or sweets that fades quickly can also occur. Because the discomfort may be intermittent, try to note which foods, which side and which movements trigger it so you can describe the pattern clearly to the dentist.
Sometimes a piece of tooth or an old filling breaks away, leaving a jagged edge your tongue keeps finding. Large older fillings and teeth that have had root canal treatment can be more prone to fracture. Even if a broken tooth does not hurt, it should be checked, because the remaining structure may now be weaker than it looks.
Finding the crack
The dentist may ask you to bite on a special instrument one cusp at a time, use magnification or a light to look for fine lines, and test how the tooth responds to cold. Gum measurements around the tooth can also give clues. Combining these findings helps identify which tooth is involved and roughly how far the crack seems to extend.
Hairline cracks often do not appear on X-rays, particularly when they run in the same direction as the image. X-rays are still useful for checking decay, existing restorations and the bone around the root. In some cases the full extent of a crack only becomes clear once an old filling is removed during treatment, and the plan may be adjusted then.
Treatment paths
For a crack limited to the outer part of the tooth, a bonded filling, onlay or crown may be recommended to hold the tooth together and spread chewing forces. A crown is often suggested for back teeth because it covers and braces the cusps. The dentist will explain why a particular restoration is being suggested for your tooth.
If the crack has reached the nerve and caused lasting pain or infection, root canal treatment may be needed before the tooth is restored. A crack that extends down the root below the gum line can make the tooth impossible to save. In that case, the dentist will discuss removal and the options for replacing it.
Preventing further damage
Until treatment is completed, chew on the other side and avoid hard or sticky foods such as nuts, ice and hard candy. A temporary restoration may be placed to protect the tooth in the meantime. If pain becomes constant, keeps you awake or swelling develops, contact the office promptly rather than waiting for the planned appointment.
Grinding, clenching and chewing on hard objects all increase the risk of cracks. Ask whether a night guard might be appropriate if you show signs of grinding. Regular checkups allow large older fillings to be monitored, so the dentist can recommend reinforcing a weakened tooth before it fractures instead of after it breaks and leaves fewer options.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe when the tooth hurts and which side of your mouth is affected. Mention if a piece has broken off or if you notice any swelling around the tooth.
Keep any broken fragment in a clean container, and let the team know about past treatment on that tooth such as large fillings or a root canal.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Unlike bone, tooth enamel and dentin do not knit back together. A crack may stay stable for some time, but it can also spread. Treatment aims to hold the tooth together and protect it from further splitting under everyday chewing forces.
Cracks often flex slightly under certain pressures, briefly irritating the nerve. That is why pain may appear only with particular foods or bite angles. Noting the pattern of your symptoms helps the dentist locate the affected tooth more quickly.
Often, especially for back teeth, because a crown covers and supports the cusps. Smaller cracks may sometimes be managed with a bonded filling or onlay. The dentist will recommend an option based on where the crack is and how deep it appears.
It depends. Severe pain, swelling or a large piece breaking off should be assessed promptly. Seek emergency medical care for facial swelling spreading quickly or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Milder, intermittent symptoms still deserve a timely appointment.
Not always. Cracks that extend deep into the root or split the tooth may mean it cannot be kept. Early diagnosis improves the chance of saving the tooth, which is why it is worth having intermittent biting pain checked rather than waiting.
A crown covers a weakened tooth to restore its shape and strength. Glen Meyer patients can learn when crowns are advised, how they are made and their care.
