A cracked tooth often causes a brief, sharp pain when you bite down or release, or a twinge with cold drinks. Some cracks are only in the enamel, while others extend deeper toward the root. Because they tend to grow over time, early diagnosis gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
Patients from Cultus who notice biting pain or a visible break can contact our Port Dover office for an assessment. The dentist will try to locate the crack, judge how far it extends and explain which repair options are realistic for that particular tooth, and how soon they should happen.

Finding the crack
Pain that comes and goes, happens with certain foods or appears when chewing on one spot is typical. Large fillings, grinding and biting hard foods increase the risk. Try to note which side and which foods trigger the pain, as this helps the dentist focus on the right area of your mouth. Cracks can be frustratingly hard to pin down from symptoms alone.
The dentist may use magnification, a special light, a bite test on individual cusps or dye to make a crack visible. X-rays help look for related problems, although cracks themselves do not always appear on images. Sometimes a crack can only be fully assessed once an old filling is removed. The dentist will explain this possibility beforehand.
Types of damage
Fine surface lines in enamel, called craze lines, are common and often need no treatment. A fractured cusp, where part of the chewing surface breaks away, can usually be restored. These less serious types are often found during regular checkups or after a piece of tooth breaks off while eating. Teeth with large old fillings are especially prone to them.
A crack that extends down toward the root or splits the tooth is more serious. If the nerve is affected, root canal treatment may be required, and in some cases the tooth cannot be saved. The dentist will explain the likely prognosis and why acting sooner can make a difference. A crack caught early is more likely to be repairable.
Repair options
Small cracks or chips may be repaired with bonding. When a crack runs through a larger part of the tooth, a crown or onlay can help hold it together and spread biting forces. The dentist will discuss how much of the tooth would be covered and how many appointments the restoration will take. A temporary crown may be placed while the final one is made.
If a crack has reached the pulp and caused inflammation or infection, root canal treatment may be recommended before a crown is placed. When a tooth is split beyond repair, extraction and replacement options will be discussed. Ask about the expected long-term outlook for any treatment you are considering. Knowing the odds helps you compare repair with replacement.
Protecting the tooth
Until the tooth is repaired, chew on the other side and avoid very hard, sticky or extremely cold foods. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you. Contact the office promptly if pain becomes constant, swelling develops or a piece of the tooth breaks away. Those changes can mean the crack has reached deeper.
If grinding or clenching contributed to the crack, a night guard may protect your other teeth. Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels and hard candy. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor large fillings and other teeth at risk, so that weakened areas can be reinforced before they fracture. Planned repairs are usually easier than emergency ones.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if biting causes pain or you see a crack. Describe which side hurts and what triggers it so the team can arrange a suitable assessment.
Mention any grinding habits, recent dental work on that side and whether the pain is getting worse. These details help with timing and diagnosis.

Pain on release is a common sign of a cracked tooth. Biting can spread the crack slightly, and releasing allows it to close, irritating the nerve. The dentist can test individual cusps to help locate the crack.
No. Unlike bone, teeth do not repair cracks. Some minor surface lines need no treatment, but deeper cracks usually require a restoration to protect the tooth from further damage. Delaying can allow a crack to spread.
Not always. A root canal is considered when the crack has affected the nerve, causing inflammation or infection. The dentist will test the tooth and explain whether that is likely in your case and why.
Cracks are often very fine and may run in a direction that X-rays cannot capture clearly. The dentist combines symptoms, tests, magnification and sometimes inspection under old fillings to make a diagnosis with reasonable confidence.
It depends on the crack’s size and location. Small cracks may be bonded, while larger ones often benefit from a crown or onlay. The dentist will recommend the option that best protects the remaining tooth.
A dental crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth. Cultus patients can learn when crowns are advised, how many visits they take and how to care for one.
