A little refinement

Reshaping removes a small amount of enamel to even out a smile.

Cosmetic tooth reshaping, sometimes called contouring or enameloplasty, involves gently polishing away tiny amounts of enamel to smooth a rough edge, shorten a slightly long tooth or soften a pointed tip. It is usually quick and often done without freezing. Because enamel does not grow back, it suits only minor changes on teeth with enough healthy thickness.

Walsingham patients interested in subtle refinements can have their teeth assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will look at enamel thickness, your bite and how your teeth move against each other before deciding whether reshaping alone is appropriate or whether a combination with bonding would give a better result.

Good candidates

Reshaping suits small, specific concerns.

Minor edges, points and overlaps

Small chips, uneven tooth lengths, slightly pointed canines and tiny overlaps between front teeth are typical concerns that reshaping can address. Removing a fraction of a millimetre can make edges appear smoother and more even. The dentist will explain exactly which teeth would be shaped and how much of a difference is realistic.

When reshaping is not enough

Teeth with thin enamel, large fillings, sensitivity or significant crowding may not be good candidates. Larger gaps or major shape differences often need material added rather than removed, such as bonding or veneers. If the concern relates to alignment, aligners might be the more appropriate starting point.

Checking the bite

The bite has to stay comfortable after shaping.

  • Enamel thickness and X-rays

The dentist examines the teeth closely and may take X-rays to judge enamel thickness and how close the inner layers are to the surface. This helps avoid sensitivity or weakening the tooth. Teeth with existing problems, such as decay or cracks, need those issues addressed before any cosmetic polishing is considered.

  • How teeth meet when you chew

Front teeth guide how your jaw moves when you bite and chew. Changing their length or shape can affect that guidance. The dentist will check how your teeth meet in different jaw movements, sometimes marking the bite, so that reshaping improves appearance without creating new pressure points or uneven wear.

The appointment

Reshaping is gradual and checked as it goes.

  1. Marking and polishing the enamel

The dentist may mark the areas to be shaped, then uses fine polishing instruments and discs to remove small amounts of enamel. Because the outer enamel layer has no nerves, most people feel only vibration. Work is done in small steps so the change can be assessed frequently rather than removing too much at once.

  2. Reviewing the result together

Once shaping is complete, the teeth are polished smooth. You will have a chance to look in a mirror and discuss the result. The dentist checks the bite again before you leave. If further refinement or bonding was planned, the next step is explained, along with any instructions for the next few days.

Aftercare

Reshaped teeth need the same good care as any others.

Brief sensitivity and protection

Some patients notice mild sensitivity to cold for a short time after reshaping. Using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and avoiding very cold drinks can help. Contact the office if sensitivity is strong or lasts more than a few weeks, or if a tooth feels sharp or catches your tongue.

Keeping the refined look

Because the change is permanent, protecting the remaining enamel is important. Avoid biting nails, opening packages with your teeth or chewing ice. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard, since grinding can undo careful shaping by wearing edges unevenly. Regular checkups help monitor the teeth over time.

Planning your appointment

Exploring reshaping from Walsingham

Call our Port Dover office and describe which teeth bother you and why. The team can book an assessment so the dentist can check whether reshaping is suitable before any changes are made.

Photos showing the edges or shapes you dislike can help explain the concern. Mention any sensitivity or grinding habits when booking.

Tooth reshaping questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does tooth reshaping hurt?

Most people feel little discomfort because only a thin layer of outer enamel is polished. Freezing is not usually needed. Mild cold sensitivity can occur afterwards and generally settles.

Is reshaping permanent?

Yes. Enamel does not grow back, so removed enamel is gone for good. That is why the dentist plans carefully and removes only small amounts in stages, checking the result as they go.

Can reshaping close a gap?

Not usually. Reshaping removes material, so it cannot add width to fill a space. Bonding, veneers or orthodontic treatment are more typical options for closing gaps between teeth.

How long does it take?

Simple reshaping of a few teeth can often be completed in one appointment. The time depends on how many teeth are involved and whether bonding or other work is combined with it.

Can reshaping fix crooked teeth?

It can make very slight overlaps look smoother, but it does not move teeth. Noticeably crooked teeth are usually better addressed with aligners or braces, which the dentist can discuss with you.
