Cosmetic reshaping, sometimes called enamel contouring, involves removing a very small amount of enamel to smooth rough edges, even out slightly uneven lengths or soften pointed teeth. It is one of the more conservative cosmetic options, but because enamel does not grow back, it is only appropriate for modest changes on healthy teeth.
Walsh residents considering reshaping can have their teeth assessed at our Port Dover office. The dentist will check enamel thickness, bite and gum health, show you what could reasonably be changed and explain whether reshaping alone, or a combination with bonding, would better achieve your goal.

What it can do
Small chips, slightly longer front teeth, little bumps or ridges and pointed canines are common reasons people ask about contouring. When done carefully, the adjustment can make a smile look more balanced without injections or lengthy treatment. Results are visible immediately after the appointment, which appeals to people who want a quick, modest improvement before a photo or event.
Reshaping cannot fix significant crowding, large gaps or deep discolouration. Thin enamel, existing sensitivity or teeth that are already worn may make it unsuitable altogether. If too much change is needed, the dentist may suggest bonding, veneers or orthodontic options instead, and will explain clearly why reshaping alone would not be enough to reach your goal.
Assessment
The dentist examines the teeth and may use X-rays to evaluate enamel thickness and the position of the nerve. Your bite is checked, because changing the shape of an edge can affect how teeth meet and guide each other when you chew. Any decay or gum problems are typically treated before cosmetic work goes ahead.
You may be shown the planned areas with a mirror, photographs or light marking on the teeth. Ask how much enamel will be removed and how the result might look from different angles and in photos. It is always easier to remove a little more later than to replace enamel that has already been taken away.
The procedure
Using fine instruments and polishing discs, the dentist removes small amounts of enamel in stages, checking the shape as they go and stepping back to look at the whole smile. Because only enamel is involved, anaesthetic is often not needed, though you can let the team know if you feel uncomfortable at any point during the visit.
After shaping, the teeth are polished smooth so the surface does not attract stain. The dentist checks your bite to make sure the changes do not interfere with chewing or side-to-side movement. You can review the result in a mirror and point out anything that feels or looks uneven so it can be refined before you leave.
Afterwards
Mild sensitivity is possible for a short time, particularly to cold drinks or air. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help during that period. If sensitivity is strong or lasts more than a couple of weeks, contact the office. Most people return to normal eating straight away, with no special recovery period or diet needed.
Brush gently twice daily, clean between your teeth and avoid habits like nail biting or chewing on hard objects that could chip edges again. If you grind, mention it, since a night guard may protect your result. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor wear over time and spot any new rough areas early, while they are easy to smooth.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to book an assessment. Explain which teeth bother you and what you hope to change, and the dentist will advise whether contouring is suitable for your teeth.
Photos that show the concern in natural light can be useful, along with information about any past cosmetic or orthodontic work.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Most people find it comfortable because only the outer enamel is smoothed. Some feel mild vibration or brief sensitivity during polishing. Tell the dentist if anything is uncomfortable so the pace can be adjusted or a break taken.
Yes. Removed enamel does not regenerate, which is why only small, carefully planned changes are made. Discuss the exact plan before treatment so you understand that the result is lasting and cannot simply be undone.
Not on its own. Gaps usually need bonding, veneers or orthodontic treatment to close. Reshaping is more suited to smoothing edges or adjusting length and contour, sometimes alongside one of those other treatments as part of a plan.
Often, yes. Slightly reshaping one tooth while adding bonding to another can create a more even smile with minimal change to healthy teeth. The dentist will explain whether a combination suits your teeth and goals.
When only small amounts of enamel are removed from healthy teeth, strength is generally not significantly affected. The dentist will assess enamel thickness first, precisely to avoid removing too much from any one tooth or area.
Bonding can repair chips, close small gaps and cover marks. Walsh residents can see how it is planned and placed in Port Dover and what upkeep it needs.
Veneers can change the colour, shape and length of front teeth. Walsh patients can see how veneers are planned in Port Dover and what upkeep to expect.
