Cosmetic tooth reshaping, sometimes called enamel contouring, involves removing a small amount of enamel to smooth a chipped edge, soften a pointed tooth or balance uneven lengths. Because enamel does not grow back, the change is permanent, and the approach is generally limited to small adjustments where enough healthy enamel is present.
If you are in Villa Nova and one or two teeth seem slightly out of proportion, our Port Dover office can assess whether reshaping is suitable or whether another option, such as bonding, would achieve a better result.

Suitable concerns
Small chips, slightly overlapping edges, a canine that looks sharper than its neighbours or front teeth of slightly different lengths are common reasons people ask about contouring. The changes are usually measured in fractions of a millimetre. Point out exactly which tooth bothers you and how, so the dentist can judge whether a small adjustment would make a visible difference.
Significant crowding, gaps, discolouration or teeth that are short overall are not well addressed by removing enamel. In those cases, bonding, orthodontics, whitening or veneers may be discussed instead. Thin enamel, sensitivity or teeth with large fillings may also make reshaping unsuitable.
Checking the bite
Teeth guide jaw movement when you bite and slide them together. Changing an edge or point can alter that guidance. The dentist will check how your teeth meet in different positions before suggesting any contouring, so the adjustment does not create new pressure points or affect comfort when chewing.
X-rays and a close examination help confirm there is enough enamel to remove safely. If there are cracks, decay or gum issues near the tooth, those are typically addressed first. Ask the dentist to show you exactly where enamel would be smoothed and roughly how much change to expect.
The procedure
The dentist may mark the areas to be adjusted, then use fine instruments to smooth the enamel a little at a time. Anaesthetic is often unnecessary because the change is limited to enamel, though you may feel vibration. You can usually look in a mirror during the process and give feedback.
After shaping, the tooth is polished to leave a smooth surface. Your bite is checked again to make sure everything meets comfortably. Because enamel cannot be replaced, the dentist will typically take a cautious approach; it is easier to remove a little more later than to undo too much.
Afterward
Mild sensitivity can occasionally follow reshaping, particularly to cold. It usually settles. If sensitivity persists or the bite feels different, contact the office so the dentist can check the area. Toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help in the meantime if the dentist suggests it.
If chipping was caused by grinding, nail biting or chewing hard objects, those habits can damage the new edge as well. Ask about a night guard if you clench or grind. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor wear and spot changes early.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office and mention the tooth or teeth you would like to change. The team can arrange an assessment so the dentist can examine them and discuss options.
A close-up photo showing the concern can help you describe what bothers you. Mention any sensitivity you already notice.

Because only a small amount of enamel is removed, many people find it comfortable without anaesthetic. You may feel vibration or mild sensitivity. Let the dentist know if anything feels uncomfortable.
Yes. Enamel does not regrow, so changes cannot be reversed. This is why the dentist takes a conservative approach and checks your bite carefully.
Generally not. Removing enamel does not close spaces. Bonding, orthodontics or other options may be more appropriate for gaps.
It is sometimes used alongside bonding or whitening as part of a broader plan. The dentist can explain how options might fit together.
Sensitivity may suggest thinner enamel or other issues. The dentist will assess the cause and advise whether reshaping is appropriate.
Bonding adds tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, cover spots or close small gaps. Villa Nova patients can learn its strengths and upkeep in Port Dover.
Veneers are thin facings bonded to the front of teeth to change colour or shape. Villa Nova patients can weigh suitability, preparation and upkeep.
