Subtle refinements

A small amount of contouring can even out a smile.

Cosmetic reshaping, sometimes called enameloplasty or contouring, gently removes a thin layer of enamel to smooth chipped edges, soften pointed canines or balance teeth that look slightly uneven in length. It is usually quick and comfortable, but because enamel does not grow back, it suits small changes rather than major corrections.

If you live near Vanessa and have a minor feature in your smile you would like to refine, the dentist at our Port Dover office can assess whether reshaping alone would help, or whether bonding, whitening or another option would be a better match for what you have in mind.

Who it suits

Reshaping works best for modest, surface-level changes.

Minor irregularities

Small chips, rough edges, slight overlaps and teeth that are a touch longer than their neighbours are typical reasons people ask about contouring. Healthy teeth with adequate enamel thickness are needed. The dentist will consider how your teeth meet, because reshaping should never weaken the bite or create new pressure points that could cause chipping or soreness later.

When reshaping is not enough

Larger gaps, significant crowding, dark discolouration or thin enamel usually call for a different approach. Bonding, veneers, whitening or orthodontic treatment may be discussed instead, or combined with a little reshaping for balance. The dentist should explain clearly where contouring alone would fall short of your goal, so you are not left disappointed by a result that was never achievable.

Planning

Careful planning protects the tooth you keep.

  • Checking enamel and bite

The dentist examines the teeth and may take X-rays to check enamel thickness and the position of the nerve inside each tooth. Your bite is checked so that shortening or smoothing one tooth will not shift pressure onto another in a harmful way. Any decay or gum concerns are dealt with before any cosmetic work begins.

  • Agreeing on the change

You and the dentist agree on exactly what will be changed and by roughly how much. Sometimes the dentist marks the teeth or demonstrates in a hand mirror. Because enamel removal is permanent, take your time to make sure the planned change matches what you have in mind, and ask questions until you feel confident.

The procedure

Most reshaping is completed in one short visit.

  1. Gentle contouring

Using fine instruments and polishing discs, the dentist removes very small amounts of enamel, stopping frequently to check the result from different angles. Because only the outer enamel is involved, freezing is often unnecessary. You can usually look in a mirror along the way and give feedback before the dentist goes any further with the next tooth.

  2. Polishing and review

Once the shape is right, the surfaces are polished smooth so they do not catch stains or feel rough against the tongue and lips. Your bite is checked again with marking paper. If reshaping is being combined with bonding on nearby teeth, that may be done during the same visit or planned as a separate appointment.

Afterward

Recovery is usually simple.

What to expect

Most people return to normal eating straight away. A little temporary sensitivity is possible if enamel was thin in one spot, and it typically settles within days. Your tongue may notice the change in shape for a while before it feels normal. Call the office if sensitivity persists or your bite feels uncomfortable when chewing.

Protecting the result

Brush and floss as usual and keep up regular checkups. Avoid habits like biting nails, chewing pens or cracking seeds with your front teeth, which can chip edges again. If you grind your teeth at night, ask whether a night guard would help protect the reshaped edges from fresh wear over the coming years and decades.

Exploring reshaping from Vanessa

Book an assessment at our Port Dover office and point out the specific teeth that bother you. The dentist will explain whether reshaping suits them, what it can achieve and what else might help.

Photos of how your teeth looked before a chip or years of wear can help the dentist understand what you hope to restore.

Tooth reshaping questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Does tooth reshaping hurt?

Most people feel little or no discomfort because only the outer enamel is involved, and there are no nerves in that layer. Freezing is usually unnecessary, though the dentist can discuss comfort options with you beforehand if you are concerned about sensations.

Is reshaping permanent?

Yes. Enamel that is removed cannot grow back, which is exactly why reshaping is kept conservative and planned carefully with you before any change is made. The dentist removes only small amounts and checks often as they go.

Can reshaping close gaps?

Reshaping on its own does not close gaps between teeth. Bonding, veneers or orthodontic movement are more typical choices for spacing. Reshaping may be combined with those treatments to refine edges and balance the overall look of the smile.

Will reshaping make my teeth sensitive?

Minor, short-lived sensitivity is possible, especially where enamel is thin. The dentist assesses enamel thickness first and avoids removing too much, which reduces that risk considerably. Mention any sensitivity that lasts more than a few days.

How long does the result last?

The new shape itself is permanent, but teeth can chip or wear again over time depending on habits and bite forces. Good daily care, avoiding biting hard objects and keeping up regular checkups all help maintain the result for years.
