Caring for Townsend patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for TownsendSmall adjustments, careful limits
Cosmetic tooth reshaping, sometimes called contouring, involves gently removing small amounts of enamel to smooth rough edges, even out slightly uneven lengths or soften pointed tips. It is often a quick way to refine a smile, but because enamel does not grow back, it suits only certain teeth and certain concerns.
If you live in Townsend and are bothered by a minor chip or an uneven edge, our Port Dover office can assess whether reshaping makes sense. The dentist will check enamel thickness, your bite and the health of the teeth before suggesting reshaping alone or combining it with bonding or another option.

Is reshaping suitable?
Tiny chips, front teeth that are very slightly different lengths, pointed canines and small overlapping corners can sometimes be improved with careful contouring. The changes are subtle and often finished in a single short visit, usually without anaesthetic, since only the outer enamel is involved. Reshaping is also used to fine-tune edges after orthodontic treatment has straightened the teeth.
Teeth with thin enamel, large fillings, existing sensitivity or decay are usually poor candidates. Bigger chips, noticeable gaps or real misalignment generally call for bonding, veneers or orthodontics instead. The dentist will tell you honestly if removing enamel would risk weakening a tooth or making it sensitive, and suggest a better alternative in that case.
Planning the change
The dentist will look at how your teeth meet when you bite down and when you slide your jaw forward and to each side, because the edges of the front teeth help guide those movements. Shortening a tooth that plays an important role in your bite could change how your teeth work together. X-rays may also be used to check the size of the nerve before any adjustment.
Talk through exactly which edges or corners bother you, and when you notice them most. The dentist may mark the teeth or use a mirror to show how the outline could change. Because enamel removal is permanent, it is wiser to start conservatively. A little more can be refined at a later visit if needed, but enamel that has been removed cannot be put back.
The procedure
Using fine polishing instruments, the dentist removes tiny amounts of enamel at a time, pausing often so you can look in a mirror and comment on the change. Most people feel a gentle vibration rather than any discomfort. The bite is checked as the work goes on, so the adjusted teeth still meet comfortably with the opposite teeth when you chew and speak.
Once the shape looks right to both of you, the surfaces are polished to a smooth, glossy finish, which helps resist staining and feels natural against the lips and tongue. You can usually go straight back to your normal activities. If reshaping is being combined with bonding to rebuild a chipped area, that may be done during the same visit or at a separate one.
Afterwards
Some people notice mild sensitivity after reshaping, particularly to cold drinks or cold air. This often fades within days, and a toothpaste for sensitive teeth may help in the meantime. If the discomfort lasts more than a couple of weeks or seems to be increasing, let the office know, so the area can be checked for any other cause that may need attention.
Try not to bite your nails, chew on pens or use your front teeth to open packages, since these habits are often what chipped the edges in the first place. If grinding contributed to the original wear, a night guard can help protect the reshaped teeth. Keep up with regular checkups so the dentist can keep an eye on the edges and your overall oral health.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe the edges or shapes you would like to refine. The team can schedule an exam so the dentist can tell you whether reshaping is likely to suit those particular teeth.
Bring photos that show the concern clearly, and mention any sensitivity, grinding habits or orthodontic treatment you have had in the past.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Most people find it comfortable, since only the outer enamel is smoothed and the nerve is not involved. Anaesthetic is usually not needed. Tell the dentist if anything feels uncomfortable during the procedure, so they can pause and check before continuing.
Yes. Enamel that has been removed does not grow back, which is why the dentist takes a cautious approach. If you later want more change, bonding or other treatments can add to the tooth rather than taking more enamel away.
Only very small overlaps or uneven edges. Noticeable crowding or misalignment usually needs orthodontic treatment to correct properly. The dentist will explain what reshaping can and cannot achieve for your particular smile before anything is done.
Yes. It is often paired with bonding to fill a small chip, or used after orthodontics to tidy up edges. The dentist can suggest a sequence that reaches your goals with the least possible change to healthy enamel.
Some people notice short-term sensitivity, but lasting problems are uncommon when enamel thickness has been checked beforehand. Sensitivity that persists beyond a couple of weeks should be reported, so the dentist can assess it and suggest how to manage it.
Bonding uses tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps and improve shape. Learn how it works, how long it lasts and how to care for it.
Veneers can change the colour and shape of front teeth, but they are a lasting decision. Townsend patients can learn about suitability, preparation and upkeep.
